    WHO WAS BKS IYENGAR?

Yoga, a combined practice of physical and spiritual exercises, has its origin thousands of years ago in India and has nourished through the years. But it developed as something of interest for the West till BKS Iyengar introduced it. He dedicated his eight decade long career for promoting Yoga throughout the world. He was the pivotal in spreading yoga as anyone could do that offers a number of benefits for the overall wellbeing of an individual. He refined his own style of Yoga, popularized as Iyengar Yoga.

Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar aka BKS Iyengar’s birth was in one of the Indian state, Karnataka on December 14, 1918. His mother was in the clasp of influenza when she was pregnant with him, and he had to suffer its effects for a long time. He was much weak in his childhood and struggled frequently with typhoid, malaria and tuberculosis. When he was in fifteen, he shifted to Mysore on the asking of his brother- in- law and yoga guru Tirumalai Krishnamacharya. Iyengar began practicing yoga asana under him so as to improve his health. That was the biggest turning point. Though his teacher didn’t turn to him first, the dedication that Iyengar showed later impressed him. At an age of 18, he was sent to Pune to teach a group of students mostly older than him. But he did well and improved himself with learning and experimenting Yoga for hours. It was that time a systematic disciplined tradition for Yoga, later named as Iyengar Yoga got developed. He wished not to restrict Yoga to any group, but in reach for everyone. So he introduced simple asana and began his career as an independent Yoga teacher. Soon he rose to fame and began to attract famous personalities
