About this ebook

In this decade, artificial intelligence may meet all of our needs; including companionship.

After a year of hard work, two young men struggling on their startup company in California’s Silicon Valley, have completed their first prototype. The Perfect Man.

Ben Carlson, a Hollywood special effects specialist, designed the handsome masculine wrappings for his co-owner Mason Wyatt’s A-I robotic man. As the brains behind the project, Mason gave their creation everything he needed to survive; a creative mind, one that could connect to wifi for data, mechanical movements, which improved with practice, and most important, compassion. It was Ben who had given this robot his human musculature and stunning good looks.

It appeared construction worker Ethan Reegan was the object of the A-I bot’s attention.
But...as this Simulated Automated Man or SAM, became animated, perfected smart learning, and grew independent, a moral dilemma hit the two men.
Was their creation a slave to human needs? Or was he now an individual with rights? The right to decide what he wanted and who he wanted to serve?

Time would tell whether Mason and Ben’s Perfect Man would be allowed to make his own decisions.

    Chapter 1

Twenty-five year old Benjamin Carlson leaned over his computer keypad searching the World Wide Web for the items his new startup company, Mas-Ben Bots, needed. He and his partner, Mason Wyatt worked late into the evening on their new concept A-I robot. Slowly, after a year of hard work and massive debt, he and Mason’s creation was taking shape.

As fall crept into the daylight, turning afternoon to dusk, Ben sat back in his padded chair and yawned, stretching his arms over his head.

After glancing over at Mason, Ben checked his phone for messages. He was tired and hungry.

The weekend had come finally, but, he and his partner would end up back here again working. They needed to finish the robot by next weekend, when a convention was held. It was one of the largest technology-robotic gatherings in Southern California, and he and Mason were going to debut the product of their labor.

    Dude?

Mason stopped typing code for a moment.

They were in a room without windows, one enclosed by white smooth walls, no artwork, no posters…just computers, wiring, and parts and pieces for their project.

The space was small, with only two computer terminals. They were going to be expanding right after the debut of their technology, so they needed more room for a larger group of computer techs. With luck, this startup was going to hit it big with investors.

What time are the construction guys coming tomorrow? Ben asked, since they wanted the men to work over the weekend to get going on their expansion.

Um. Nine? Eight? Mason replied, also stretching his neck and back, his dark framed eyeglasses reflected his computer screen, his mocha skin shining under the fluorescent light.

Ben checked the time. It was after seven-thirty. I can’t see straight anymore. He rubbed his eyes.

Let’s finish up. I’m beat too. Mason’s fingers made light tapping sounds on the keyboard.

Ben saved and shut down his work as well, and then stood from his chair. He walked over to a door, one that led to a second room, where they left their projects while they worked on their computer terminals.

He and Mason had created an A-I business, offering human-like robots. Lifelike machines were growing in popularity, and he and his friend Mason wanted to be on the cutting edge.

Between the two of them, they had garnered all the technology that was available in the field, and embellished it with their own unique programs. The availability of human-like robots on the market was booming. He and Mason intended on capitalizing on that boom. With Mason’s brilliance, and his knack for molding and aesthetics, Ben brought the handsome good looks to the creature, while Mason gave them their artificial brains and mechanical movements.

Ben opened the door and entered the room, turning on lights since the inside of the space was dark. As he did, he paused to inspect their automated creations. Most were in pieces. All but one.

Mason entered the office with him, admiring their work.

Both he and Mason approached the robot, one that was dissected at the moment at the waist. His top half was on a desk, his lower half was horizontal on a table.

Ben touched the soft silicone skin to activate the unit.

The eyes slowly opened to glass orbs with human-like irises which contracted from the light. I am SAM.

    SAM. Smart Automated Man.

Hi, Sam. Mason stood behind the robot and investigated the computer chips which were exposed from his scalp at the moment.

    Hi, Mason.

Smiling as the A-I bot reacted correctly and spoke to them, Ben stood in front of Sam so it could see him. Hi, Sam.

    Hi, Benjamin.

They had added facial recognition to the A-I’s ‘brain’, so if he had met you or could find you on social media, he would know you.

Ben chuckled at what he perceived as curiosity from Sam. I friggin love you.

I friggin love you too, Ben.

Mason shook his head. I feel like Dr Frankenstein, except instead of a monster, we’ve invented a perfect man.

Ben had indeed searched the world for the right facial structure to use, judging what was appealing in a man’s looks.

His studies had found it was about symmetry; angular jaw lines, high cheekbones. Ironically, the color wrapping didn’t matter. ‘SAM’ could be any shade at all and still be stunning.

They had prototypes of him from pale white to chocolate brown, eyes every hue imaginable, and hair color was also optional.

Ben kept his focus on Sam as Mason hooked up a wire to a USB port in Sam’s neck at the base of his skull, a spot that would soon be covered in hair, human hair.

When Ben first thought of the design for Sam over a year ago, he was in a bar with his sister, Diane. Poor Diane had done everything imaginable to find a boyfriend. Online dating, single groups, bars, matchmakers, nothing seemed to work.

So? He had joked he was going to build her the perfect man.

Diane told him, If you’re going to make him for me, can I have a say in the design?

As Ben thought about his sister’s idea for her mate, he smiled at Sam.

    Sam smiled back.

    Sam? Ben said.

    Yes, Ben?

This weekend, men are going to be here working. So there will be noise and strangers.

Okay, Ben. Sam blinked his blue eyes, the mink hair lashes long and full.

Mason stood at a computer monitor, one on a stand. It held all of the programming information for S.A.M. and his future A-I family.

Mason had added an encyclopedia of knowledge for deep-learning intelligence, so Sam could debate. He also had microphones in his ears, cameras for eyes, receptors in his skin to feel heat, cold; he could detect aromas of every kind, which Sam could identify, and not only did Sam have facial recognition, but Sam could interact with anything from a dog to a violent threat. And…he could walk. Not only was Sam better than any other A-I bot on the market, Mason had given Sam something very important; consciousness. Sam could care.

S.A.M. was indeed the perfect man.

One of us should be here when the construction crew arrives. Ben touched Sam’s soft eyebrow. But, Sam? I wouldn’t worry about them. They may be curious, but they won’t hurt you.

    Yes, Ben.

Mason said to Ben, Ask him to move his hands.

Before Ben did, Sam opened his fingers. His arms were held up by the long table his upper torso was resting on.

Good job, Sam. Mason went back to his computer.

Ben stared at Sam. It made him chuckle, since his sister had no idea how close they were to finishing him. Once they worked Sam’s glitches out, they would begin production on a whole line of these A-I robots. Hopefully, they would help not only lonely people like his sister, but, in time, maybe they could do all sorts of tasks.

Driverless cars, drones used for everything from war-craft to package delivery, the future was now. And sex dolls had become another perk of the field.

SAM and his A-I brothers, could give and receive sex.

They could simulate pleasure and an orgasm, but Ben had no idea how Mason could create receptors so Sam could indeed feel real sensations and not just react to appropriate stimuli.

At the moment they had taught Sam to feel pain, heat, and caressing. But, that was his electronic sensors, not Sam’s own choices, yet. It was Mason’s genius to allow Sam to figure out his own likes and dislikes, based on a program of options.

    Smile. Mason tapped more keys.

Ben watched Sam smile. Looks good, Mason.

Mason walked around Sam to judge for himself. Wow. Sam, great smile.

    Thank you, Mason.

    More teeth? Mason asked Ben.

No. He’ll look creepy. He has an anatomically correct jaw and teeth count.

I don’t want to look creepy, Sam said.

Ben chuckled and patted his cheek. Nope. You never will, buddy.

Thank you, Ben. Sam reached out his hand and wiggled his fingers.

Ben made sure Mason saw it, since it was Sam’s own reaction to their kindness. Ben clasped Sam’s electronic hand in his.

    Sam squeezed it gently.

I love you. Ben was so proud of their creation he was dying to finish it.

I love you too. Sam smiled.

Ben released Sam’s hand and had a look at the lower half, which was lying prone at the moment.

It wasn’t a plastic doll. This guy was anatomically correct. His cock had a slight pumping action that reacted to touch and stimulation. Even his balls were lifelike, moving in a gentle rhythmic pattern when you watched them. They felt just like real testicles, since he and Mason had used implants that were given to men who had surgery to remove them.

    And…Sam’s cock vibrated.

Yes, he listened to his sister on that one.

Mason? When can we attach him? Ben touched the soft silicone based polymer that was superconductive almost to the point that it was real skin. The technology was created for those who had lost limbs, to be able to feel hot and cold.

The advancement in the field was making giant leaps, no longer baby steps. And his buddy Mason was becoming the leader in that technology.

Mason stopped typing and walked closer to him. Both of them inspected Sam’s lower half. He’s ready to go. We had him walking last week. I just needed to adjust his sex organs. He was getting erect too often.

    Ben chuckled. Like me?

Mason shook his head at Ben.

Hey, Sam? Ben asked, Do you want to get sexually aroused a lot, or not much?

Mason gave Ben a smirk because they hadn’t programmed an answer for that silly question yet. But, his advanced programs could search the internet for the answers.

More is always better, Sam said.

Ha! Mason nudged Ben. See? Sam likes to be sexy.

He already is. Ben glanced back at Sam, and Sam was staring at him with his bright blue eyes.

No, you can’t take him home yet. Mason walked back to the computer and said to Sam, Goodnight, Sam.

Goodnight, Mason. Sam shut his eyes and Mason disconnected him from the USB plug.

Ben’s smile faded as Sam went into sleep mode. They had a battery pack, one that could be recharged, but didn’t install it until Sam was ready to walk on his own again.

While Mason shut down the computer, Ben stood in front of his perfect man. He ran his fingers along the smooth skin of Sam’s cheek. I do love ya, buddy.

Mason tapped Ben’s arm and signaled for them to leave. As Mason returned to the first office they occupied, Ben shut off lights in Sam’s room and paused before closing the door. He may just be an A-I bot, but Ben was already crazy about him.

And that was a good thing. It was the goal of their project. To create that guy. The one that would be there, to help, to love, to enjoy, and never let you down.

His sister deserved that. Did he deserve it too?

Mason picked up his phone and walked to the door leading to their lobby. Ready? Melinda’s expecting me.

Yeah. Ben made sure he had his personal items as Mason shut off more lights and set a security alarm.

They left their office in Silicon Valley together. The weather in Southern California was still warm until late evening. Then the wind would pickup and blow cool air across the scorched ground. The fires had been brutal once again and he would love to supply Cal-Fire with an army of Sam-bots trained to fight fire. Maybe one day.

But fall was closing in on them with the promise of much needed rain.

So, tomorrow? Ben paused before walking to his car.

You want to meet the construction crew or should I?

    Either way.

I’ll take the morning shift. I have things to do tomorrow afternoon.

Okay. Knowing Mason was married to a lovely woman, Ben said, I’ll be here at noon.

    Cool. Sleep well.

You too, Mason. Ben walked to his older hybrid car in the empty lot and sat behind the wheel. As he started the quiet engine, he stared at his and Mason’s offices. Was it crazy to worry about Sam all alone?

    He’s going to be fine.

Ben pulled out of the parking area and drove to his Irvine rental home.

    Chapter 2

Saturday morning, Ethan Reegan finished his coffee. A construction company he had worked with previously had a weekend job to do. A Silicon Valley startup needed more office space. It was a simple job, four walls, no windows, but a ton of electrical work.

His best buddy from high-school Lucas Curry, tried to tempt Ethan to not take the job and play this weekend, but Ethan needed the money. Lucas was a tennis instructor for a posh social club, and seemed to be able to work when and how much he wanted.

He checked his phone first, then headed out of his two-bedroom apartment in North Hollywood. Sitting in his pickup truck, his ball-cap on his head, Ethan drove to the location. Since it was early on a Saturday there was no traffic on the highway.

Ethan parked near another extended-cab pickup truck, seeing the bed loaded with wood, drywall, and spools of heavy wiring.

As he pulled into a parking spot, three other trucks did as well.

With this much manpower they would easily get the job done, or at least framed in and ready for paint.

He hopped out of the high truck and glanced up at the sun which was rising in the clear morning. He removed his tool-belt from a metal locked box in the truck bed.

James Jarrod, the owner of the construction company, stood near his truck drinking from a store-purchased cup of coffee. The older man greeted his crew as well as the journeymen.

Ethan crossed his arms in the cool breeze, his flannel shirt cutoff at the shoulders.

James said, We’re waiting for the owner to arrive. He checked his watch. Just as he said it, a hybrid car pulled into a spot with a power-plug outlet.

Ethan watched as the spectacled young man of color exited his car and actually plugged it in.

Hi. The young man smiled and waved, nudging his eyeglasses higher on his nose. This way.

Ethan followed with his crew as the young man unlocked a glass door and used a code in a security pad.

Ethan hadn’t seen the place before, but the foreman obviously had. The crew was shown to an area which was just an open space.

Markings on the floor indicated where the walls would be placed, as well as the outlets and wi-fi connections. As Ethan took a look, he found lines marked on the concrete floor where each desk would eventually be located, so they were doing quite a bit of electrical work and wiring.

    That was his specialty. Electricity.

While James spoke to the young man, Ethan craned his neck at the open drop ceiling, seeing the wiring that was already in place from the original construction.

It was pretty straight forward work.

James nodded he understood the job, his arms folded over his chest. As he worked out details, he signaled for the rest of the crew to get started.

Ethan and his coworkers returned to their trucks and gathered the wiring bundles and other supplies. Ethan adjusted the tool-belt on his hips, and then stood on the back of a truck bed, handing down a spool of heavy wire.

A cart was loaded with the bulky items and Ethan rolled it towards the glass entry, as Carter, another electrician, opened the door for him.

Thanks. Ethan pushed the cart to the open space.

The young man of color gestured to a door. Inside there is a restroom and a fridge filled with bottled water and soda pop. I can do a lunch run for you later.

That’s great, Mason. James shook his hand. We’re anxious to get started.

Ethan moved the cart to a concrete wall and put his hands on his hips. Carter asked him, What do they make here?

Computers? Ethan said, shrugging, "What else do they make at these Silicon
