When perpetual student Jake Hillebrand starts having strange dreams, no theory is too outlandish - even the possibility that he has become a werewolf. His best friend Don is no help, though – he doesn’t even believe in werewolves! When the dreams lead Jake and Don to the body of a despised developer dumped along a Houston bayou, the only ones listening to Jake's theories are the dishy Detective Ruben Petreski and Jake's feline visitor, Boo. In a historic neighborhood under threat from developers, everyone is a suspect, but so far all Jake's new-found psychic abilities seem to be good for is finding kittens and talking to squirrels. He's really going to have to up his game if he wants to escape the killer's attention - and catch Detective Petreski's. It's July in Houston, and when heat waves and storm warnings finally give way to flooding rains, Jake Hillebrand's strange dreams take a sinister turn. When the flood waters recede, the body of a young woman is found on the banks of Buffalo Bayou - a young woman whose life overlaps with that of Detective Victoria Perez. With Perez on the sidelines, maybe she and Jake can finally come to an understanding. Or not. Petreski's working with a new partner, Jake's declared a major, Jennifer Katz is moving on with her life, and Don has no idea that the new cat hanging around his apartment is not what she appears. Jake, Petreski, and the rest are back for another installment of caffeine, snark, and a touch of romance. It's the start of a new semester and familiar faces are popping up all over - most of them unwelcome. Jake knows Petreski's not going to like his new study buddy and Don has a big decision to make. Jake's mother will no longer be denied, and it's meet the parents time. Miss Nancy's past comes calling in an all too literal way. And to top it all off, Petreski's ex shows up and it turns out there's someone out there who Perez hates even more than Jake. Oh, and somebody gets murdered. Now with fewer carbs and more caffeine!

It's Jake and Boo's first Christmas together, and they're heading to Waxahachie to spend it with Petreski's family. As if meeting your boyfriend's parents isn't nerve-wracking enough, there's also a mob of siblings, a town full of gossips, trouble with alocal holiday display, and someone's been sending poison pen letters to the local priest. Oh, and the pie is a bit of a disappointment. In a house full of Cats, the nights are anything but silent, and it's not long before Jake is convinced the Petreski family home is haunted. The truth, though, may be even stranger.  Who said small town life was boring? Now with extra chocolate and nuts! And an elf.

When an old friend of Miss Nancy's dies under mysterious circumstances, Jake and Don find themselves back in Mesquite Springs, Texas. It could have been nothing more than spring break in Texas wine country, except people keep turning up dead. And with Petreski stuck in Houston, Jake is forced to form an uneasy alliance with Perez.    Eleanor Sharpe was more than just the proprietor of the town's occult bookshop and leader of the local coven. The Sharpe family had been protectors of The Source, a magical spring at the heart of town, for generations. Now, with Eleanor gone, only one Sharpe remains: Eleanor's niece, Talia.    Talia Sharpe is convinced she's not a witch. Well, pretty sure, anyway. And Eleanor's death might well have been from natural causes. But then things start going bump in the night and Talia's not sure about anything anymore.   There's magic in the air and mystery underfoot as Jake and the gang try to unravel just what's going on in this town.   Contains pie, coffee, small town eccentrics, donuts, wine, and a witch.
