THIS NOVEL IS FOR ALL lovers of fantasy, young or not so young. I hope you enjoy my fantasy prequel to The Sixth Key.

    Chapter One

THREE-YEAR-OLD TYNAN chased his father round the sundial at the centre of the rose garden while his mother Alivet watched. The boy’s dark hair reflected the sunshine and she smiled as Tynan giggled then grabbed his father's leg.

    Got you, Daddy.

They look good together, don't they? Alivet rose to her feet and bobbed a curtsy at the appearance of King Thorsa. Sit, my dear, do you mind if I join you?

The King sat beside her and they watched the father and son examine the roses, sniffing each one and commenting on the scent.

The three of you make a lovely family. When Barat comes to the throne I know the kingdom will be in good hands.

I hope you'll be with us for a long time, Your Majesty. Alivet smiled at her father-in-law. You have so much to do before you pass the throne to your son.

Alivet, my dear, you and Barat must take care. You know the reason he spent so much of his youth travelling, but only the three of us know the truth. I believe my younger son Hurat suspects and, when I am gone, he will try to usurp the throne. You must be ready to fight for what belongs to Barat. King Thorsa stared at her, a stern expression in his eyes. Do you understand?

Yes, I do, Your Majesty, but what can we do? If Hurat proves his suspicions, the council will take the throne from Barat. Tears pricked Alivet's eyes. She'd been afraid this situation might arise, but had tried to keep her fears from her husband.

Remind them they have no right to overlook Barat. Tell them to read the original documents for ascending to the throne. They make no mention of magic. He looked up and smiled. Hush now, Tynan and my son are coming. I wanted to warn you so you are prepared.

The family entered the castle hall and approached the top table. Hurat sat to one side of the huge chair in the centre. He smirked as his older brother's family seated themselves on the other side and Thorsa sank into the larger chair. Alivet hid the shiver passing through her body. Hurat had always made her nervous, but his glances in her direction in recent months had taken on a more covetous nature.

RAIN FELL LATER IN the week, making it impossible to walk in the gardens. To use up some of her son's abundant energy, Alivet took him to the portrait gallery on the top floor of the castle.
