, 2014, would forever be imprinted in my memory. At exactly three o’clock, we received the devastating news. My mother’s five-year battle with breast cancer was about to end. She had lost. The cancer had spread aggressively through her liver and had made its way into her brain.

It felt as though the words ‘stage four’ echoed throughout the white-washed room, bouncing from wall to wall. I wanted to scream and cover my ears, as if that would change the diagnosis. If I blocked out the words, maybe—just maybe—they would disappear.

My mother took the news as best she could. Hand in hand with my dad, she smiled and politely listened to every single word the doctor had to say. Her cascading black hair was now shaved, usually covered by a beautiful array of silk scarves. The bones in her face protruded and the small white hospital robe hung off her once strong shoulders, exposing yellowing skin. If you spoke to her, you would forget just how sick she actually was. Her charm and personality couldn’t be stifled. She would never let the cancer win that battle. To say the least, my mother was a strong woman, and that was what had made her Fairview City’s highest paid attorney.

A little part of me died when the doctor said she might only have a month or two left to live.

    My mentor.

    My best friend.

The bravest person I knew was going to leave me.

A twinge of pain ripped through my chest while my fingers fidgeted against the edges
