    Chapter 1

    Rest Defined

Are you or have you ever been at your wits end when you didn’t know what to do with your life? Are you living in fear or under stress? Do you feel like a failure and bereft of viable options for your life?

Maybe you have been cheated on by a spouse; abused emotionally, physically or sexually by a trusted family member or friend. Or maybe you have suffered betrayal or abandonment from people you trusted and thought had your best interest at heart. Perhaps you find yourself on the brink, out of options and not far from giving up on your life.

The devil wants you to think you’ve come to the end of the road but don’t buy into his deception. Your life is still worth living and God had a purpose for your life when He created you. You have it in you to overcome any challenge. Challenges for the most part are impediments the devil brings our way to prevent us from achieving our earthly purpose. But with Christ they end up as stepping-stones and not stumbling blocks

God’s desire is for you to prosper in all things. He wants you to prosper in your health, finances, relationships, profession, career, ministry, family, marriage, wisdom, knowledge, love and everything else that pertains to life. Don’t let anything or anyone give you the impression God doesn’t care or isn’t interested in you. God is very much interested in what happens to you. He holds you in the palm of His Mighty Hand and loves you more than you can even begin to love yourself.

    3 John 1:2

Beloved I pray that you may prosper in all things

And be in health, just as your soul prospers

    Isaiah 49:15-16

Can a woman forget her nursing child

And not have compassion on the son of her womb

Surely they may forget yet I will not forget you

See I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands

Your walls are continually before me

God allowed His Son to be sacrificed in order to secure for us a peaceful and prosperous life called the Rest of God. It’s a respite from the stress and cares of the world. This rest is obtainable in Christ Jesus. If you believe by faith that Jesus is the Son of God and that God raised Him from the dead to redeem you from sin, you qualify for this rest. Your acceptance of Christ makes you a child of God and an automatic qualifier of this awesome blessing.

Experiencing the ‘rest of God’ doesn’t mean trouble won’t come against you. The road network you will travel on in the ‘journey of life’, consists of side streets called ‘Challenges’. Challenges exist everywhere so you will surely encounter them on your journey. However if you ‘rest’ in God through Christ Jesus, challenges will not overwhelm you. A child of God or one born of God is mandated to overcome because whatever is born of God receives spiritual empowerment from Him to overcome ALL challenges.

    1 John 5:4-5

For whatever is born of God overcomes the world

And this the victory that has overcome the world – our faith

Who is he who overcomes the world

But he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

Whenever a challenge comes up against you the outcome will always be victory in your favour. That is the nature of the ‘rest’ you have been blessed with in Christ; that is why it’s called rest.

    2 Corinthians 2:14

    Now thanks be to God

Who always leads us in triumph in Christ…

The Form & Features of The Rest

The rest available in Christ is an all encompassing and comprehensive rest. Anything that could cause anxiety or fear has been taken care of by Christ Jesus to give you rest. You have absolutely nothing to be concerned about. The rest of God is rest from poverty, sickness, bad relationships, marital strife, loneliness, failure, childlessness and from financial insufficiency.

It includes rest and protection from the evil of terrorism and from highly virulent epidemic outbreaks such as Ebola. Is it really possible to find rest from all these? The answer is an emphatic YES.

    Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want

He makes me to lie down in green pastures.

He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul

He leads me in the path of righteousness for His name’s sake

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death

I will fear no evil for You are with me

Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies

You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life

And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever

Psalm 23 in the Bible epitomizes the form and features of the rest believers have in God through Christ Jesus. The rest of God takes care of everything from helping you maintain your righteousness to ensuring your provision, protection, peaceful circumstances and victory over your enemies. You don’t have to struggle to walk in righteousness because God provides the grace that enables you do that.

    Chapter 2

    Rest Robbers

Even as God has provided us with rest, there are adversaries or ‘rest robbers’ who conspire to steal this rest from us. ‘Rest robbers’ constitute obstacles and ‘opposing forces’ that contrive to prevent people from accessing the rest available in Christ Jesus. Some of these obstacles are generated within us, but there are those that emanate from without.

The rest robbers or obstacles that emanate from without generally take the form of demonically inspired attacks that purposely work to steal your peace. They may manifest in either a spiritual or physical form. A lady I knew in church sought my assistance to overcome demonic dreams in which she found herself repeatedly engaging in sexual intercourse with entities that appeared like men. She sounded ready to end it all when she reached out to me for help.

I gave her scriptures to meditate on and reminded her of what Christ had achieved for her, which is deliverance from the powers of darkness (Colossians 1:12-13). I shared the truth with her and the truth made her free (John 8:32).

    Colossians 1:13

He has delivered us from the power of darkness

And conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love

    John 8:32

And you shall know the truth

And the truth shall make you free

I had a dream years ago in which I appeared to be talking to a ‘doctor’ who wrote ‘stroke’ on a piece of paper. The following day I woke up suffering from symptoms of stroke. But I overcame them by the grace and Word of God. The devil’s attacks to steal your ‘rest’ are mostly spiritual in origin before they manifest physically.

I remember another dream in which my back was grazed by the teeth of a dog and woke up to excruciating back pains for a brief period of time. These spiritual attacks don’t bring rest, they aim to steal it and destroy your life in the process. They only reveal one thing - that we live in a spiritually influenced world. Therefore to be ‘naturally minded’ can be costly.

    Romans 8:6

For to be carnally minded is death

But to be spiritually minded is love and peace
