James Sullivan is my father’s right-hand man and his fixer. I suspect maybe even a hitman, although he’d deny it to his grave. He was born in Dublin but lived here in New York as far back as I could remember. And yet somehow at the age of thirty-seven, his immigration status was called into question.

My father, Bruce Lynch, a notorious gangster, suspected one of his enemies was responsible for trying to get James deported and there was no way he was going to let that happen- James was like a son to him. I was like a daughter to him, when it was convenient and in this scenario, I became very convenient.

Lucy, you have to marry James. If you marry him, they can’t deport him. It won’t even look suspicious- you’ve known him for years and he’s always around you. My father sat across from me at the dinner table and barked out his command. It might have sounded like a request, but it was definitely a command.

Daddy! I’m nineteen years old! James is almost twice my age! How can you expect me to marry him? We’re always fighting! James Sullivan was the most handsome man I had ever met in real life, and I’d wanted to lose my virginity to him ever since I found out I had one to lose. But there’s a difference between sex and marriage and there was no way I was going to give in so easily.

    Where’s the fun in that?

Well, I’ll tell him to stop fighting with you. I’m sure you start at least half of them, Lucinda. You’re very contrary. He wagged his finger at me.

Daddy! I am not! I start almost EVERY fight, but it’s all part of the dance and I get such a kick out of making him crazy. He loves it, I know he does.

Besides, I can’t believe he’d agree to this—doesn’t he have any pride?

Yes, I do and I’ve told your father I don’t want to marry you if you’re not willing. James walked in at just the right moment. He always had such impeccable timing.

She’s willing, aren’t you Lucy? Daddy was such a bully.

For how long? You promised me I could go live in Paris when I turned twenty and I’m nineteen now. How long do I have to stay married? I was in full tantrum mode, never mind that I was already wet thinking about the wedding night.

Four or five years at least—I get a green card in about eight months and then after three years I can apply for citizenship. James glared at me. He was so fucking hot. His incredible body, his black hair, blue
