Dragon Hearts And Nightmarish Times
Chapter One
The Armor-Clad Warrior
Cara and her pair, Black Fire, had just returned from the field of flowers and found their beloved nest, Firedrake, all aflame. They rushed to see their mother, but Modor and all her guards had been slain. They had found their baby sister alive, but a vicious armor-clad figure fell Black Fire with a movement of their hand and killed their baby sister with a stroke of their sword. Cara was all alone… She was all alone among the dead with no one to help her and no one for her to save. Cara cried as she stared at this mysterious figure who seemed to have destroyed the entire nest on their own. They paused and stared at her, peering at her as if debating whether or not to finish her off. They turned as if they had decided she was not worth their effort and started to leave Firedrake. Relief immediately poured over Cara, but then she realized what she was left with.
Where are you going?
Cara screamed after them. You have not finished!
She stood to her feet and chased after them in a desperate limp, leaving behind the smoke and fires and all the dead. Stop!
Cara lost sight of the figure after she crossed the threshold of the Large Sand Gate, exiting the actual nest of Firedrake. She also didn’t see her little sister’s body that should be on the path. Cara looked up in the sky and noticed that all three moons were still out during the day trek. She limped a little further, and then a hot wind like that off of an intense blaze swept over her and nearly knocked her to the ground. She covered her eyes to protect them from the wind and when the wind ceased, Cara dropped her arms to her side. Thick dust and smoke encompassed the area. She walked a little farther and came across the figure of a dragon sitting in her path. The smoke and dust dissipated, and she saw that it was Bold who was sitting there. Her once-hatchling was the only dragon that remained at Firedrake. Bold, the small pale dragon, was the only one who remained alive besides herself.
Look what you have caused,
Bold hissed at her. Look at the death and destruction you have caused.
Me..?
she uttered. Did you not see the armor-clad figure killing everyone?
Bold turned and looked behind himself as if he could see the figure marching off into the distance, and then he said, All I see is you. You brought all of this destruction with you. You, Cara-AabiLynn, are the reason Firedrake shall be destroyed.
Shall..? It is already destroyed,
she spoke as she motioned behind herself. Cara turned and suddenly, she was sitting up in the field of flowers.
Her hatchling Black Fire was peering at her curiously, and then he projected to her, You have been keeping your mind from mine.
She looked all around unsure if what she was seeing was real. Cara stood to shake off what she now thought was a dream. Behind them in the distance was their escort.
I had a nightmare…
Cara spoke. It was a very… very horrible nightmare.
I did not dream it with you,
he projected. Your mind is still closed to me.
I am not doing anything to keep you out,
she insisted.
I believe you,
Black Fire spoke. I believe another is keeping you all to himself.
You are right,
she spoke. I do sense… someone close.
Black Fire, the murky-black dragon hatchling with blood-red eyes, became enraged and searched the fields of flowers and then spotted the one he was looking for. He took to the air and landed on Bold who was hiding some distance from them. Black Fire roared at him as if he would attack.
You are such a violent murky-brute,
Bold hissed back at him.
Release my pair,
Black Fire projected.
She does not only belong to you,
Bold whispered to him. Or do you also believe that I did not claim her long before you?
Black Fire was surprised to hear such a thing, and he became very angry at his lie, but he did not act on his anger as Cara came limping to them.
Release my pair!
Black Fire projected with more force.
Bold unlinked his mind from Cara, and Black Fire could hear her thoughts again.
What did you do to me?
she questioned the pale hatchling. Why did you make me dream such a horrible nightmare?
Who says it was a nightmare?
Bold questioned her. Maybe I allowed you to see what shall be. Maybe you saw a future you shall bring to Firedrake.
No!
Cara yelled, and then she said, Black Fire, we have to hurry and return to our mother and sister.
She mounted her hatchling, and they fettered, and then they were immediately in the sky. Their escort chased after them, leaving Bold all alone in the field of flowers. He watched until he couldn’t see them in the sky anymore, and then he picked a blue flower and stared at it. Cara could have given him a flower if he had remained her hatchling. Bold smashed the blue flower with his claws, and then he hurried and found a high place he could jump from and help him glide into the air. He returned to Firedrake chasing after the one who saw so much potential in him.
Black Fire landed at Firedrake and quickly ran to the Queen’s Chamber, keeping Cara on his back. During the whole flight back, he had seen images of Cara’s nightmare and understood why she was so afraid. They had not pair-synced during their nap in the field of flowers and so they had not shared the connexion-dream, actually, her mind had been completely closed to him and Black Fire didn’t like that sensation. The only other times that her mind had been completely closed to him were when Cara had been in great danger. Black Fire paused just outside the entrance to their mother’s room as he felt his pair’s immense anxiety and deep fear of what they would find within. Cara unfettered from him, and then the two of them slowly entered the Queen’s Chamber. Modor was there playing with their baby sister. Cara turned and wept on Black Fire’s front talon. She had bottled up all her emotions since leaving the field of flowers, and now that she knew her mother, sister, and everyone at Firedrake was safe, she could let her emotions run freely. Her baby sister, Ortus, felt her older sister’s fear and grief, and the burnt-yellow baby dragon queen began to cry. Cara forgot about her own distress and quickly limped over to her little sister and picked her up.
Modor also sensed the trepidation within her older daughter and questioned, What is wrong?
Black Fire projected, My pair had a very bad nightmare.
I think it was more than that,
Cara spoke. Bold did something to me, and I believe he forced me to see the future.
Modor moved over to her older daughter, leaned her large head down to her, and then breathed in Cara’s scent. The girl was frightened and grief-stricken, so she gently rubbed her nose against her and questioned, What of this believed future has you in such a state?
Cara wrapped her stunted left arm around her mother as she hugged her baby sister, and then she calmed herself further so not to upset Ortus. The love and concern Modor had for her allowed her to push some of her fear out of her heart, and she was able to explain, In the nightmare, I saw Firedrake afire and in ruin. No one was alive and this armor-clad figure…
She couldn’t bring herself to finish as she peered down at her baby sister who reached up her front talons to her as she cradled her. Cara bent her face to her, and Ortus gently touched her face. Cara sniffed as a couple of tears streaked down her face, and then she said, We should talk about this when it is just the three of us.
Chacha,
Modor called out, and a female Minik’Ejderha dragon, who was one of her attendants, entered. Modor ordered her, Take Ortus to her playroom and have her run around. I shall call you when it is time to bring her back.
Chacha nodded, and then two fighting pairs followed them to the playroom.
The burnt-orange dragon queen waited a few moments, and then she said, If you shall allow me, I would like to peer into your thoughts. I would like to see this nightmare with my own sight.
Cara nodded and approached her mother. Modor leaned down her great head and touched the tip of her nose to her older daughter’s forehead. She lived through the nightmare Cara had and saw the armor-clad figure slay her youngest daughter. Modor lifted her head still caught within the nightmare and gave a great dragon scream that was filled with her own grief and anguish. The dragons and dracomen standing without immediately entered the Queen’s Chamber.
It took Modor a few moments to regain herself, and then she told them, All is well. You may return to your positions.
Both the dragons and the dracomen bowed and returned to their post.
Modor questioned her daughter, Did you say that Bold caused you to have this nightmare?
I believe so,
Cara replied. Bold was within the nightmare, and he said I caused all the death and destruction I saw around me. I explained to him that an armor-clad figure had killed everyone. Bold told me that I brought the destruction and that I shall be the reason Firedrake shall be destroyed.
Cara paused, and then she said, I thought it was just a very bad dream when I first woke, but then I sensed that Bold was in the field of flowers.
You sensed him…
Modor repeated.
I did and then when…
Cara glanced at her pair and decided not to mention how he violently pounced upon Bold, and she merely said, We spoke with him, and he accused me again.
Modor walked over to the entrance and ordered a dragon, Have Bold come here?
No need,
the pale hatchling spoke as he walked in. "I
