      Introduction

      The Ransom of Red Chief is one of those short stories more often referred to today than actually read. It is a humorous story about two bumbling kidnappers who abduct a ten-year-old boy from his home in a small rural town, hoping to extort a couple thousand dollars from the boy's wealthy father. The boy turns out to be more trouble than he is worth—he kicks and hits the men with rocks and exhausts them with his endless energy
