    About the Author

    Chapter One

The pentagram was spray-painted on the grass in Lauren’s postage stamp-sized backyard, and she stepped into the middle of it, candles bunched in hands. There wasn’t much in the way of grass or shrubs anymore, but that was inevitable since Tal liked to make a grand entrance with a little fire.

Which he always did. He claimed it was part of his charm.

She placed a candle at each of the pentagram’s five points. Fire, earth, air, water, and spirits, she thought as she lit them. They were mismatched, a couple nearly burned down to nubs, but they would do. Their small flames danced in the cool April air.

Tal had joked a couple of times that she didn’t need to chant to summon him, that he’d always come running to her if she just called his name like he was a normal person, but she never did. She wasn’t sure she could handle any unintended consequences that could come with irregular summoning, and while she wasn’t particularly powerful, she was still a witch. Witches liked ritual. "Veni, she said quietly, omnipotens aeturne daemonium Talgraxon..."

She didn’t have to finish the chant before a smaller-than-usual puff of brimstone-smelling smoke was belched from her dried-out excuse of a lawn and a pale-faced, trembling Tal—her favorite being in the world, although she hadn’t told him that—materialized. Swaying on his feet, his red-rimmed dark eyes fixed on her face and he held out his hands toward her. Bruises marred his skin.

Tal? she said, not bothering to hide her alarm. She’d never seen the demon in such a state.

Thank you, he said, his voice a low croak. I’ve been waiting for you to call me for what feels like forever.

And with that pronouncement, he collapsed against her.

    ****

It took a few unnerving minutes to drag Tal into her house, but Lauren managed, arranging him on the flowered couch that had belonged to her grandmother. To his credit, Tal tried to help, shuffling his feet to help her out, but he clearly couldn’t stand up of his own volition just yet. It was unnerving to see him like this, so unlike his usual self, cracking jokes and making the occasional pass at her.

What happened? she asked once he was lying down.

He winced and touched a bump on his forehead. His usually-immaculate charcoal suit was wrinkled and his tie askew. She’d never seen him so disheveled. Can I get a drink?

It’s not even dinner time yet.

    Please?

    Tell me what happened first.

If you get me a drink then I’ll tell you, he said. And not water. I know you have a bottle of Laphroaig in your liquor cabinet.

Maybe he wasn’t that injured if he was demanding premium imported whiskey. Lauren arched an eyebrow at him.

Tal returned the gesture, a ghost of his usual arrogant smile on his lips. He must be on the mend.

They stared at one another in defiance. Lauren was the first to crack. Damn it, she said and crossed the short distance to the other side of the living room to the liquor cabinet. She opened it and removed the whiskey bottle and a pair of short rocks glasses that had also belonged to her grandmother. Do you want ice?

He sucked in an audible breath at the question. Are you serious? He sounded appalled.

She shrugged and bit her lip to hide her smile as she splashed some whiskey in each of the glasses, more for him. She sat down at the battered easy chair at the head of the couch and handed him his glass.

Tal levered himself up one elbow, the movement drawing a wince from him. Thanks, he said. He took a quick swallow and set the half-full glass on the coffee table with a bang. I needed that.

Lauren didn’t touch her drink. Do you mind telling me what’s going on? Usually, when I summon you, you’re trying to get in my pants.

    She’d tried her hardest to
