    PROLOGUE

On a blustery Thursday afternoon, Amelia Scott sat down opposite her brother Aydan in the Mirabelle restaurant in upper Manhattan. She brushed off snowflakes from her black, woolen coat.

Why did you need to see me so urgently? she asked, searching her brother’s face. Unease gripped her at the sight of Aydan’s deep frown and the grim set of his mouth.

Sis, I’m in trouble. I’ve been accused of stealing $50 000 from my boss, Mr. Wilson Cutmore.

Amelia’s hand flew to her mouth. What?

Aydan swore under his breath. I’m being set up. I’ve no idea how that cash got into my briefcase. Last night, as I was leaving the building, security insisted on searching my briefcase, and the cash was found.

Amelia’s mind was in a tailspin. She’d been thrilled when Aydan had landed the job as a marketing executive at Cutmore Corporation. How could things get so messed up?

She swallowed her fear. Have you been fired? Is Mr. Cutmore going to press criminal charges?

I’m on temporary suspension, and my boss says he won’t press charges—

Amelia let out a breath. Oh, that’s a relief.

Unless you undertake a special task for him, Aydan completed wryly.

Amelia blinked in surprise. What special task?

I want you to search for the Sun Ruby at the Chandler residence. Your patient Douglas Chandler is in possession of that ruby which rightfully belongs to the Cutmore family, a gruff voice spoke up.

Amelia turned to find Wilson Cutmore, leaning heavily against his walking cane.

I-I don’t u-understand—she stuttered, as the man took a seat.

I heard your brother mention you were a nurse who got retrenched from a hospital due to budget cuts. I pulled a few strings at the employment agency you’d signed up with and got you the position as Douglas Chandler’s nurse. His father, Caleb Chandler, cheated my father, Lawrence Cutmore, out of the Sun Ruby during a card game in 1958.

Amelia shook her head. This is crazy, Mr. Cutmore. There’s no way I can find this ruby for you. The Chandler mansion is massive. I wouldn’t even know where to begin looking.

Cutmore handed her a slip of paper. To my knowledge, there are two safes in the mansion. Start there. One is in Douglas’s room and the other in the library of his eldest son, Deacon. These are the safe combinations. If you don’t deliver that ruby to me, your brother will be arrested for theft. I can make sure he spends a long time behind bars.

    CHAPTER ONE

Deacon Chandler entered the living room, with a cup of coffee, to find nurse Amelia Scott intently studying a row of artefacts mounted on the wall. He leaned against a pillar and took a sip of his coffee, allowing himself a moment to admire Amelia’s firm but sweetly rounded buttocks.

Deacon knew he shouldn’t be so interested in his father’s new nurse, but he couldn’t help himself. He’d been expecting a matronly sort of woman to take on the role of his father’s caregiver and nurse. Much like the previous women employed in the position—solid and middle-aged. He sure as hell wasn’t expecting an alluring twenty-seven-year-old brunette with luscious curves and a sensuous mouth that begged to be kissed.

Deacon hoped Amelia wouldn’t run off like the last four nurses, who’d declared his father to be the most rude and challenging patient they’d ever encountered. It was not an easy task caring for Douglas Chandler, one of New York’s most famous billionaires, who for the last three months had been confined to a wheelchair, after a mild stroke.

Douglas Chandler may have lost the use of his limbs, but his tongue was still sharp as a rapier, and he gleefully used it as his weapon to taunt, belittle, and complain incessantly about everything.

Amelia didn’t appear to be intimidated by Deacon’s father. There was a determined lift to her chin, and Deacon sensed a feisty personality beneath her politely professional countenance. She seemed to possess an infinite amount of patience as she dealt with his father. Well, she’d only been his nurse for the past month. Maybe it was just a matter of time before his father finally got to her and she threw in the towel.

AMELIA EYED THE AZTEC mask, wondering if a ruby could be hidden behind it. Since her meeting yesterday with Aydan and the crafty Wilson Cutmore, her stomach was knotted with worry. Aydan had called her late last night to let her know he’d consulted with an attorney but unfortunately things weren’t exactly in his favour. It was going to be difficult to prove that Aydan had been set up. The attorney was  only confident that he could get Aydan a reduced sentence at best, on grounds that he had no prior criminal history.

Amelia bit on her lower lip. Could she find the ruby and save her brother from a jail sentence?

Her gaze shifted to a Zulu shield. Perhaps another secret safe, which contained the ruby, was located behind the shield. She was just about to take a peek behind the shield when she heard movement behind her. She turned sharply to find Deacon Chandler watching her while he sipped his coffee.

Amelia’s heartbeat increased each time she and Deacon were in the same space. Her brain also turned to cotton wool whenever he spoke to her. She could barely think when she looked into his green eyes which reminded her of the emerald waters of a Florida beach. His hair was the dark, rich color of the coffee he favored. Her gaze settled on his lips, and she suddenly wished she were the coffee cup that his mouth was touching. As one of New York’s most famous playboys and eligible bachelors, thirty-three-year-old Deacon Chandler commanded attention whenever he entered a room, with his striking good looks and magnetic presence. And since taking over the running of his father’s business empire, he was also garnering accolades for his sharp business acumen and tough-as-nails negotiating skills.

But being attracted to Deacon was a complication Amelia didn’t need. Not when she was tasked to steal a priceless gem from his family.

Deacon gave her a friendly smile as he came to stand next to her. Good morning, Amelia.

Good morning. I was just admiring your impressive collection of artefacts.

They are exquisite. Things of beauty must be admired.

Amelia had the instinctive feeling Deacon wasn’t referring to the artefacts but to her. His gaze leisurely traveled the length of her, making her nipples tighten in response and heat to spread across her face and neck.

How is my father doing? You may have heard that he chased away his previous nurses. I hope he hasn’t been too difficult, Deacon remarked.

A smile tugged Amelia’s lips. "Yes, your housekeeper, Mrs. Monroe, told me about the previous nurses fleeing in terror. Your father can
