About this ebook
During his short prison stint as an undercover journalist posing as a prison guard, Shane Bauer reveals that within four months, about 12 incidents of stabbing have occurred; “use of force” against inmates were used often; cell doors could be opened by inmates; medical care was substandard; and a suicide happened which appeared to be preventable. He quotes a prisoner complaining: “Ain’t no order here…inmates run this bitch, son.” To make the prison budget work, educational and recreational services were removed. A prisoner had his legs cut because of an infection that was not given medical attention. Bauer reveals he himself slowly succumbed to the prison mindset of paranoia and authoritarianism.
American Prison is one of New York Times Review’s 10 Best Books of 2018. It is a New York Times Notable Book. Bauer is the winner of the National Magazine Award for Best Reporting for his Mother Jones story on private prisons.

Introducing American Prison
American Prison: A Reporter’s Undercover Journey Into the Business of Punishment is a book by Shane Bauer. Bauer, who writes for the magazine Mother Jones, exposes the private prison enterprise and how companies profit from the prison system. It also reports on the history of prison as a profit-making enterprise in America. Bauer entered Winn Correctional Center in Louisiana by enlisting as a prison guard. He worked as a guard for four months before coming out of his undercover status. In the summer of 2016, he wrote an expose about the prison for Mother Jones which became a most-read article nationwide and won major journalism awards. American Prison is a further exploration of the subject which includes a look into the country’s first private prison company, the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), and an investigation of the history of prisons as a profit-making business. Eight percent of American prisoners are now housed by these private prisons. Bauer reveals that he got a month of training to become a prison guard and started with a pay of $9 per hour. This salary rate, it turns out, is the same for all prison guards no matter how long they had been in the service. He finds out that many guards do not stay long in the service due to the low salary and lack of incentives. Turnover is high, and there is always a lack of manpower. Less than
