But I don't want to marry the Baron of Winchester.

Emberly defiantly gazed down at her father.

The Earl of North raised a brow and looked up into his daughter's angry green eyes. Her eyes always sparkled when she got angry and he had come to realize that if he didn't give her hand in marriage soon, no one would want her.

He blamed himself for whom his daughter had grown up to be. At twenty, she had charmingly refused to marry all the men he had carefully picked out of her. Last year, she had deliberately slapped poor Andrew at a ball and accused him of being a cad and a bounder. God knew that episode had caused quite a scandal and the earl had to send her to live with the dowager countess at Ravenshere for three months in the county.

You shall marry the baron of Winchester Emberly North and I will have your head if you dare ruin this arrangement like you did the last two. Nicholas North said, trying all he could to control his temper.

Emberly sighed, tapped her fingers on his oak table and let out a whistle.

Need I remind you that a lady should never ever whistle? He asked her.

The truth was, Emberly was a pearl to him. He stared at her, at twenty, she still looked eighteen. Her hair, like her mother's, was long, curly and golden. Emberly had high aristocratic cheekbones with a small pointed nose. Her neck was long and delicate. Her bosoms were a little too big for a small stature. Emberly looked perfect but for the fact that she was on the small side. She looked too delicate but the earl knew that she was quick to temper as well as quick to laughter

Father, I don't want to marry. She said. Two pairs of emerald green eyes met. One was angry and the other, defiant and frustrated.

I think I spoil you too much. I allowed you to have too much freedom after your twin sister died. He remarked.

The Earl didn't see his daughter immediately recoiled at the mention of Anna. She made her hands into a fist and held tightly onto her skirt to hide her pains.

I don't want to marry, father. She said in a calm tone.

If you don't want to marry the Baron of Winchester, whom do you want to marry? He interrogated.

    I shall marry no one.

Don't be childish. You will be twenty years in exactly two months. People think you are already on the shelf because your mates are all married and some already have kids.

Father... Emberly began but the earl went on his feet.

The baron of Winchester had asked for my permission to court you and I have already given him my blessings. If you so much as try to spoil things up this time, I shall personally see to it that I marry you off to any available man, be he old or young. There was finality in his voice as he lifted his hands towards his neck and rearranged his cravat.

    Father...please, I don't want to...

Nicholas waved at her. Young lady, you are dismissed.

If you try to force me into marrying that spineless man, I shall run away to grandmother and I shall never return. Emberly threatened.

The earl smiled, walked to his daughter and glared at her. Try me girl and I shall disinherit you.

He walked out of the study. Only when he left did Emberly let her tear to run down her cheeks. She slowly dug her hand into her reticule and removed a handkerchief. She wiped her eyes, open the study and walked out.

Emberly...good God what happened to you? The countess who was just coming down the stairs asked her daughter.

I shall not marry that spineless man and father can't stop me. She told her mother in anger.

Helen pulled her daughter into the drawing room and the two sat down.

Emberly, surely you realize that your papa only wants the best for you. You are on your way to being left on the shelf and we have to help you.

I don't want to ever marry.

The older woman looked at her daughter
