THE FATHER OF TAOISM
The great philosopher and founder of Taoism, Lao Tzu or Laozi were the founder of the Taoism and the author of Tao Te Ching. His life time was believed to be concurrent with the legendary Chinese teacher Confucius. Despite the little knowledge of his origin and life, Laozi’s teachings have flown through many centuries and generations and are still relevant.
Though most of personal living of Laozi is shrouded, the most reliable information about him was found in ‘Shiji’ written by the famous historian of 145 BC, Sima Qian. As stated by this biography, Lao Tzu’s birth was in the Ku County of the state of Chu, currently located at the Henan Province. ‘Li’ was believed to be his family name while ‘Dan’ was his designation. There is legend that it he spent almost eight years in his mother’s womb before his birth. It was the golden years of Zhou Dynasty and Lao Tzu was at the royal court as the historian. It was at that time he met the great philosopher Confucius. As the reign of Zhou dynasty was about to fade, Lao Tzu embarked on a journey to the Xiangu pass where he met the guardian of the pass. It was under his urge, Lao Tzu wrote ‘Daodejing’. ‘Dao’ means the way and ‘de’ means its virtue. This book is considered as the most
