    The Ne’er-do-wells

    The first thing Gwen Finnegan noticed when opening the door was the girl’s teeth, which were chattering like an AK-47, gas-operated assault rifle on fully automatic. The late December temperature in Central Maine had bottomed out several degrees below freezing, and the crazy kid on her front doorstep was wearing a lightweight, cotton jacket over a rayon cotton shirt. I’m looking for Gwen.

    Yes, that’s me. She gawked at the odd creature, who looked to be in her late teens or early twenties. The face was angular with high cheekbones and a tomboyish quality, more earthy than pretty. A sinewy torso offset close-cropped black hair framing pallid skin.

    The girl brushed past her into the room, lowering a backpack to the floor. Sure is cold as hell out there!

    I didn’t catch you name, the middle aged woman drawled.

    I’m Meredith, she replied in an offhand manner, "your long-lost niece
