About this ebook

Have ye received the Holy Spirit since ye believed? – Acts 19:2

Scripture clearly separates being born again, the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and being filled with the Holy Spirit. These three are not lumped together as one in Scripture. Instead, they are presented as separate experiences for the Lord's people.

Today, however, few people know exactly what the Scriptures say regarding the Holy Spirit, and the consequence is men trying to do things in their own strength. Sadder still is how one group denies the power of the Holy Spirit, while another group pursues the things of the Spirit more than they pursue Christ Himself. Somewhere in the middle is the truth. This book takes a close look at Scripture to see what the Lord Himself tells us regarding His Holy Spirit and how it relates to us today.

R. A. Torrey – A Short Biography

Editor’s Foreword

It has been more than 120 years since Reuben A. Torrey wrote this book. Yet so much of it could have been said today with an equally strong relevance for our present-day Christian culture. Although some readers hold a deep appreciation for the classic writing of the preaching greats from past centuries, so many have missed their message, hindered by the outdated language and expressions, and long paragraphs of text on word-heavy pages. This book has been revised and updated with terminology modern readers will understand and with paragraphs divided into shorter blocks, but while keeping the core of the message unchanged.

We have worked to keep the tone and style of Torrey as we studied every line and phrase to edit and update. Biographical footnotes have been added where possible, which will help readers identify the specific people whom Torrey mentioned. We have used the Jubilee Bible for most of the Scripture references throughout the book.

It is our sincere hope that by updating this book, it will open doors for more people to experience the biblical insights of Reuben Torrey. It is one of many updated classics published by Aneko Press.

Introduction

It was a great turning point in my ministry when, after much thought and study and meditation, I became satisfied that the baptism with the Holy Spirit was an experience for today and for me, and I decided to pursue obtaining it. Such blessing came to me personally that I began to give Bible readings on the subject, and have done so with increasing frequency as the years have passed. God in his wondrous grace has so greatly blessed these readings, and so many have asked for them in printed form so they could circulate them among their friends, that I have decided to write them out in full for publication. It is an occasion of great joy that so many and such excellent books on the person and work of the Holy Spirit have appeared lately. I wish to call special attention to two of these: Through the Eternal Spirit by James Elder Cumming ¹ and The Spirit of Christ by Andrew Murray. ²

In the following pages, I speak consistently of the Holy Spirit. But I want to call attention to the less desirable term used in some translations of the Bible – the Holy Ghost – in case your preferred translation uses that term. In some instances, the translators themselves varied their usage. Most of the readers of this book probably already know that the Holy Spirit and the Holy Ghost are simply two different translations of precisely the same Greek words. It seems very unfortunate, and almost unexplainable, that the English revisers did not follow the suggestion of the American committee³ to consistently use the name Holy Spirit for Holy Ghost wherever it was translated.⁴

1 Published in 1896. James Elder Cumming was a Scottish minister born in 1830.

2 Andrew Murray (1828-1917) was a South African writer, teacher, and Christian pastor.

3 The American Standard Version of the Bible is rooted in the work begun in 1870 to revise the Authorized Version/King James Bible of 1611. This revision project eventually produced the Revised Version (RV). American religious scholars were invited to work on the RV project. The denominations represented on the American committee were Baptist, Congregationalist, Dutch Reformed, Friends, Methodist, Episcopal, Presbyterian, Protestant Episcopal, and Unitarian.

4 Note that Torrey used the King James Version in the original manuscript. This updated edition of the book uses the Jubilee Bible, which translates it as Holy Spirit in all cases.

Chapter 1

What Is the Baptism with the Holy Spirit?

While so much is said in these days concerning the baptism with the Holy Spirit, I fear there are many who talk about it and pray for it, but who have no clear and definite idea of what it is. But the Bible, if carefully studied, will give us a view of this wondrous blessing that is perfectly clear and remarkably definite.

Ways to Classify the Experience

We find there are a number of designations in the Bible for this one experience. Jesus said, For John truly baptized in water, but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days from now (Acts 1:5). When this promise was fulfilled,
