    Chapter 1

My name is Alex, and I have a story to tell you....

It all started back in January, on my thirteenth birthday, but let me back up a little bit.

My name is Alex Baldacci and I grew up with just my dad in a small farming town in Georgia.  When I wasn't in school, I spent the days working the farm.  It wasn’t a huge farm by any means, but it got us by.  We had two horses and five cows.  It was my responsibility to feed and care for them before and after school and, of course, on weekends.  In a way, having them around made it feel like I was part of a much larger family.  There were many nights when I even fell asleep in the barn after telling Ben and Jerry, our horses, all about my day at school.  Mostly they just listened but, when they would neigh or make noises, I would imagine they were talking back.  Even though I had my own room, I felt much more comfortable in the barn with Ben and Jerry.

The only human friend I really had was Emily.  She was two months older than I was and my next door neighbor, if you can even say that considering that our farms put our houses relatively far apart.  Although our farm was small as far as farms go, Emily’s family owned a quite large farm with lots of acreage.  Emily and I met in kindergarten, sharing a seat on the bus for our first day of school, and had been practically inseparable ever since.

If it wasn't for school, I probably wouldn't have ever even met Emily.  My dad was always very quiet and guarded.  I wasn't sure if he was just being over-protective of me, or if he wanted to make sure I was spending my time on the farm and not with friends.  Either way, he didn't go out of his way to talk to people or make friends and didn't like me to ever have anyone over.  I figured maybe it was because English wasn't his first language and he felt awkward talking to people with his thick Russian accent.

Eventually, though, he warmed up to Emily and even got to know her parents a little.  I imagine they saw him as a gruff, stern man since he very rarely smiled and most of the things he ever said to them were more of a grunt than actual words.  At home, though, I knew my dad to be something completely different.  He was playful, imaginative, kind and funny and actually talked quite a bit...so many things he never let the rest of the world see.

When people saw me and my dad in town together, I could tell from their looks that they were wondering what woman would ever have had a child with him.  Most of the time he would be wearing dirty and torn farm clothes, and the truck was in an equal state of condition.  I sometimes begged dad to just put on a clean shirt or wash the truck, but he would just reply that he had more important things to do than seek out strangers’ approvals.  Because of that, only I saw the other side of him...a side I could easily picture my mother falling in love with.

I never knew my mother and, in fact, I have only seen two pictures of her.  One was of her and my dad when they were getting married.  My mother looked beautiful in a simple white dress.  And my dad never looked better.  He wore a simple white button down shirt and a navy blue sports coat.  They got married in an informal ceremony at the court house.  The other picture was of her holding me when I was three months old.  She looked so happy in both pictures.  Some people have awkward smiles in their pictures, but my mom’s smile was genuine.  You could even see it in her eyes.  Even though I can't remember her since she died when I was only nine months old, I still miss her every day.  Although I felt like I've known her through all the stories my dad had told me about how they met and fell in love and about how happy she was to have had me as a son, I often found myself staring at my reflection in the mirror, looking for any resemblance.  You have her spirit! my dad would always tell me when I'd complain that I didn't have her nose or eyes.

I think my mother's death broke my dad.  One minute she was totally fine, and the next thing he knew, she was gone.  She went to the hospital complaining of a sore throat that had been bothering her for a few weeks,
