    Today’s Word

How do we love God? By trusting Christ and walking according to His commandments. We also love God by trusting in His love for us. In today’s lesson, the Apostles Paul and John instruct believers to walk steadfastly in the love of God by loving one another and following God’s commandments. Make no mistake; our Christian walk is not an easy journey. It requires a lot of faith and determination to remember our calling by holding on to the principles of Christian faith that we learn through the Word of God. But our walk with Christ is made easier when we have other Christians helping us along the way. When we are a part of a Christian family, we have others who we can rely on for prayer. Today’s passages will help us see why our Christian community is so important and why we must be careful about who we listen to and accept our teachings from. We must faithfully defend and uphold the Word of God and obey His commandments.

    I. Stand Fast and Be Faithful (2 Thessalonians 3:1–5)

In the first part of today’s passage, Paul wanted us to understand that prayer for our friends is important to God. Paul was asking the Christians of Thessalonica to pray for him and his ministry. He knew that He needed the power of prayer behind him so that the Gospel could spread to others. There is power in numbers. Paul wanted to be an example that all people should be humble enough to know that they need prayer in order to spread God’s Word.

Paul urges the Thessalonians to be steadfast and persevere in their faith. In other words, be firm, be resolute, be determined and be unwavering in your faith. Because you have received God’s love through grace, then you can respond in love by obeying God’s commandments. Paul warned that we need to be steadfast in our faith so that we will not fall into sin or be influenced by the sins of others. He wanted us to have confidence that the Lord was guarding us. But we have a job to do, too. We have to remain in the love of God and continue to do His will.

II. Extend God’s Love to Others (2 John 4–11)

The greatest virtue of a Christian is to love. We must love God and we must love others. Extending love to others is a principal of our Christian faith. When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment is, He said that loving God and others were the most important commands. Love is not a recommendation. It is a command. Loving God is what motivates people to live obediently according to His commands. Romans 13:8–10 reminds us that there are many commands in the Law. Yet we can sum all of these commands up with one command, Love others as much as you love yourself. When you love, you will not steal, kill, or commit a crime against another. When you love, you will show compassion to others and choose to focus on the good and not the bad. When you love, you are extending God’s steadfast love for you. Christians are an extension of God’s grace in this world. He uses your hands to help those less fortunate and your feet to carry the Good News of the Gospel of salvation to a lost world. The love we extend to others by our acts of kindness reveals to them God’s love for
