      CHAPTER ONE

      Welcome to Fairybrooke Village the place where all the characters from your favorite fairytales come to life. But these aren’t the ones you were told as a child, not even close. I’m here to tell you what really happened.

      Like what you might ask? Let me give you the four, one, one.

      Let’s talk about Little Red Riding Hood.

      Her real name was Scarlet Gray and she lived with her parents just outside of Fairybrooke in a small cottage. She was given the name Red Riding Hood after her grandmother Mabel gave her a red hooded poncho just before she entered kindergarten.  

      Scarlet loved that poncho so much that she wore it wherever she went. As she grew older, her grandmother supplied her with a new one.

      Growing up in Fairybrooke, Scarlet went to school and played with her friends Wendi, Bella and Rose Red. Tragedy struck them when a horrible plague that the villagers called The Virus swept through Fairybrooke killing many of the adults including Scarlet’s parents.

      Not wanting Scarlet to lose her friends as well as her parents, Mabel moved in and raised her.

      Now Fairybrooke is a very small town, in that people knew each other’s business. Or thought they did. Scarlet kept a closely guarded secret that only her grandmother and best friends knew. One that would scandalize many of the villagers.

      Scarlet’s parents were not the average couple. Scarlet was nine years old when she discovered their secret, a secret she never revealed to anyone other than her grandmother in her early teens. It was Mabel who explained that Amethyst did nothing wrong, that her mother and father had a unique relationship that not everyone will understand, but one day Scarlet would. As she grew older, Scarlet started to understand when she saw Erik Anderson the first time when walking down the hall in high school.

      There was something almost hypnotic about the way he walked. Something that she couldn’t help but notice, but so did the other girls in her school. It was not unusual to see him walking with some girl hanging on his arm. But Scarlet didn’t want to be one of many, she wanted to be the only.

      But confusion reigned in when shopping with her grandmother in town, she encountered Viktor Reade in one of the local market stalls after wandering away. There was something about him that made Scarlet want to get as close to him as possible. He was tall, lean and even as a teen had a hint of a beard.

      Hello, he greeted her. Are you here alone?

      My grandmother is over there, she pointed to the baker’s stall.

      You should stick close to her, he warned. I’m Viktor Reade.

      Scarlet Grey, she introduced herself. And I’m not afraid.

      You should be, Viktor replied.
