    Prologue

    A volkrog puppy opened his eyes for the first time.  All he could see was light, and his eyes burned.  He closed them.

    What is wrong young one? a soft voice spoke in his head.

    I do not know, he replied, thinking the words in his head.

    Is it the bright light? the voice asked.

    What is light? he replied.

    He heard a strange noise with his ears, like someone or something was saying How-oo-oo.

    The puppy jumped and shook with fear.

    Do not fear, that was your father.  He is happy you are feeling well, the voice said.

    My father? the puppy asked.

    Yes, your father.  He loves you very much, and is very happy you are well, the soft voice said.  The light brings life.  It fills the sky, providing the world with brightness, providing the realm of Zhavirsto with warmth, and the plants with food.  Without the light, everything would be cold and dark, and life as we know it would end.

    The word or thought of Zhavirsto, which sounded strange to him, like jha-VIR-sta, brought to his mind the idea of the entire earth.  Everything from the cave in which he sat to the great forest, to the high jagged mountain peaks, and
