    Captain Scarrow and Captain Sharkey

    In 1714 the great wars of the Spanish Succession were over. A lot of mercenary soldiers lost (persero) their job. Some became merchants, others worked on fishing boats, but some became pirates.

    The pirate crews (ciurme), with their men from various nations, haunted (infestavano) the seas. Sometimes they disappeared. They hid in some lonely bay or port and there they surprised people with their richness and frightened (spaventavano) them for their brutality.

    In Madagascar, on the African coasts, and above all in the West Indian and American seas, the pirates were a constant menace. In summer they killed and robbed the coasts of new England, and in winter they went to the tropical islands. They were different from their respectable predecessors, the Buccaneers. The pirates had no discipline and no control. They were not afraid of anything and
