About this ebook
Linux is the only endpoint OS that is growing globally. As one person put it, "Linux is the Nikola Tesla of information technology". This OS is used in a myriad of devices including smartphones, digital video recorders, televisions, airline entertainment systems, digital signage, automobile control systems, switches, routers, the desktop, among many others. The Microsoft Windows vs Linux OS debate will not end anytime soon. However, it is very clear that Linux is winning. If you have a hard time believing this, consider the influence of Linux on Android and UNIX-based Apple devices. The only reason Windows is still common is because of its influence on many core applications. This is about to change, and Linux is, without a doubt, the future. Microsoft has been the king of End User Computing (EUC) for about 30 years. Nonetheless, there are factors such as security concerns that are pushing EUC to the data center. Due to this, there is a desire to reduce the costs and risks that are required to maintain Windows on the edge. Linux OS offers the perfect solution for this. Linux is layered and lightweight which enables it to perform very well across many types of devices. It also offers high speed and responsiveness. Because Linux has so many inherent advantages, it is preferred for endpoint applications.

Chapter 1
The Difference Between Linux and GNU/Linux
LINUX IS AN OPERATING system than can power virtually any device. Many people tend to think that Linux is a desktop operating system that is mainly used by techies and geeks, or that it is a server-based operating system that powers websites. Linux is all over. As a matter of fact, it powers most mart devices. Android phones run a Linux kernel, and those smart fridges that can restock themselves operate on Linux as well. Smart lightbulbs that can communicate with each other use Linux. The army uses rifles that run Linux. Internet of things
is a modern buzz term. The internet of things is powered by only one operating system, Linux. Linux runs huge supercomputers and the New York Stock Exchange. You can also use Linux as the operating system on your desktop computer, laptop, or netbook. An operating system (OS) is a special kind of software that interacts with a computer’s hardware. Using the example of a standard laptop, an OS must manage hardware devices such as the memory, the CPU, a hard drive, the graphics processing unit, screen, mouse, USB ports, keyboard, Ethernet card, wireless network card, screen backlight, and battery. Other than the internal hardware, the OS also interacts with external devices such as scanners, printers, joypads, and USB powered
