The Nacht Before Christmas - Eris Kelli
Preface
If you didn’t read A Nacht to Remember, or if it’s been a little while since you did, this preface will help you get caught up or remind you of what happened.
As for me, I’m going to treat this as practice for when I have to explain to the police what I’ve been up to and why I’ve done the things I’ve done. Everybody wins, right? Okay so you play the part of the cops and I’ll be me.
Hi. I’m Megan Penn, a seventeen-year-old junior at Dunkel Grove High School. I live here in Dunkel, Florida. You probably know my older twin brothers David and Justin Penn. Justin because he’s been in a few fights and David because you’ve picked him up when you were really looking for Justin.
Hmmm maybe not the best association to attach to me right off the bat.
Anyway, that’s not important. Here’s what is important. Last weekend I attended a party that Jackie Romero was throwing. I was there with my boyfriend at the time, Drayson Prat, and my friend Shelby Friedman. It was supposed to be a low-key movie night kind of party. Halloween’s over but we thought scary movies on Netflix would be fun.
Now I’m giving too much detail. Just get to it, Megan.
Juno is the senior who’s destined for a life in prison. I’m sure you know the jerk I’m talking about. He was there. Said we should go look at the sinkhole instead. It was a dumb idea, but somehow he won over the crowd and we went.
Just cut to it, Megan. They’ll either believe you or they won’t.
"Psycho Juno and I got into an argument and most of the people from the party split, including Dray. It was me, Jackie, Shelby, and Juno there when the sinkhole grew bigger. Juno ripped off my necklace, and we were fighting him to get my heirloom golden locket back. Jackie fell in the pit and so did Juno.
"Now bear with me because this is where the water gets muddy. Jackie was screaming saying something had a hold of her. Shelby and I were blinded by a light and knocked out. Or maybe we checked out? Anyway, when I came around I found out Juno got out of the pit and that Jackie is missing.
Since then I met a guy named Weston who is hot. I mean not hot like that, though he is hot that way too but hot to the touch is what I meant. I’ve seen him light up like he’s a piece of the sun. He inferred that the Nacht, which means the night, is responsible for Jackie’s disappearance and Shelby’s condition that’s keeping her in the hospital.
I sound crazy, but hey, I warned you it would be muddy.
"I snuck out of my house during a power outage to find out what Juno could tell me about what happened to Jackie. I saw the Nacht and Weston fighting, and I got yanked inside Juno’s house.
"Crap, I forgot to mention that I borrowed a dog and broke up with Dray.
"Explaining this to the police is clearly not something that is going to be a positive thing for me unless I want to land myself in a straight-jacket.
Umm…you know what? Let’s just keep this between me and you instead.
Prologue
Megan Penn
The cold sweat that had my shirt sticking to me also had me shivering in the dark. My jaw trembled on the verge of my teeth beginning to chatter I clenched my jaw shut and scanned the night for red eyes that might be glowing back at me.
The groan and snap of the step on the porch breaking told me in an instant that I was wrong—I wasn’t alone.
I pointed the sharp end of the scissors in the direction of the stairs, straining my ears to hear another sound to indicate how close they were to me. The handle was slippery in my sweaty hand, but I held on to it tightly with my fingers hooked through the handle openings. I swung my weapon trying to catch whoever was coming after me.
Cold fingers grabbed my other wrist yanking me over the threshold and into the black abyss of Juno’s house.
Don’t let go of the scissors!
Another hand closed around my throat and turned me so that I was facing the open door as my back was slammed against a wall. Where is he? Tell me how you did it, Megan.
The silhouette of the figure holding me didn’t look anything like the bully who’d started the soup sandwich my life became when he had the bright idea to take the party to the sinkhole. It sounded like him though.
Juno, just tell me what happened. Where is Jackie?
If I could just find out what happened to my best friend when she and Juno had fallen into the sinkhole, I could get out of Juno’s house. I was convinced already that the place was, in fact, the house of
