    About the Author

To all my friends whose names I borrowed for these characters.

    Puttin' on the Ritz

    I can't dance.

Nonsense, I've seen you dance plenty of times. I passed a china cup and saucer to my best friend.

But not like that. Helen pointed to the flamboyant jazz dancers, shaking their thing up on stage.

Finish your tea. The lesson starts after this number.

Do I have to? My arms will jiggle.

Your arms will be fine. You'll have fun. Trust me.

I told you I just wanted a quiet dinner, not a themed party. I should be furious with you.

You can never stay mad at me, and anyway, when have I ever let your birthday slide by?

But this must have cost a fortune.

You're worth it. Drink up and stop complaining.

She took a sip. That's not tea.

Of course not, this is a speakeasy. I swallowed my last drop of gin then placed the teacup down. I wasn't nervous about dancing but I needed liquid courage as much as Helen did.

She knocked back her drink, wincing as she clunked the delicate cup into the matching saucer. Let's get this over with. Her long strand of pearls swung as she stood. A gift Helen had believed were fake for years, but they weren't.

I straightened the white feather in her headband then, arms linked, we strode onto the dance floor.

Back, forwards, forwards, back. The dance instructor demonstrated the Charleston steps.

    That rhythm was familiar.
