    PREFACE

The subject of true leadership has been a topic of discussion in recent times. Never has there been a quest for true leadership as it is in our world today. This is evident in the challenges that arise from poor leadership and bad governance in most nations of the world which has led to political instability, economic uncertainty and social inequality. Based on this issues arising from poor leadership, there is a great need to highlight on the diverse dimensions of true leadership through this book in order to educate and enlighten the present generation and the upcoming generation on the role of true leadership in national development.

WE LIVE IN AN ERA WHERE crime and corruption has taken its toll on the leadership space of most nations and this has hindered the process of achieving meaningful progress and development. Leadership is a responsibility which encompasses several requirements. Everyone has a potential to be a leader due to the inherent gifts, talents and abilities possessed by each person. However, not everyone understands that they have an integral role to play in the transformation of their communities, societies and nations.

THE NEED FOR TRUE LEADERSHIP cannot be overemphasized and as such everyone should be willing to heed the call to serve in any capacity because leadership is all about genuine service to the people. Experience has shown that you can make a positive difference in your community without being elected or appointed to a position of authority. One of the ways you can achieve this is through Community Development Service (CDS). I remember when I served my country as a National Youth Service Corp member in Danbatta, Kano State, we were encouraged to carry out a Community Development Projects targeted at improving the lives of the people in our host communities. This was definitely a wonderful platform for developing good leadership and management skills while making positive impact in the lives of people.

I PERSONALLY BELIEVE that every nation can attain and sustain tangible development if everyone takes personal responsibility for the progress and development of their communities. This can also be achieved when there is a deep passion for the nation and the people. Passion must be born out of love for your nation and when there is genuine love for your nation and its people, it leads to patriotism. This explains why true leadership is expressed through patriotism.

TRUE LEADERSHIP IS a pre-requisite for national development. No nation can rise above its challenges when true leadership is not demonstrated in its religious, economic, political, social and educational institutions. True leadership comes with a price and this requires sacrifice. True leadership thrives on cherished values and principles. Although, it manifests itself in different dimensions, yet all the dimensions interrelate to bring out a comprehensive description of what true leadership connotes.

In this book we shall be exploring these various dimensions, how they affect societies and how they can be attained. I believe that this book will provide the required information needed for transformation of the kind leadership that exists in our society today.

    Introduction

If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.

    – John Quincy Adams, A Former President of the United States of America

True leadership is the act of influencing and impacting positively the lives of people  in order to help them fulfill their purpose and destiny. True leadership is about commanding the right influence and making the desired impact on others and it is anchored on character and conviction.  A true leader always seeks for platforms to inspire and motivate people to succeed by empowering them to lead so that they can replicate his influence on others. This is an attribute of true leadership that creates a distinction between leaders and rulers.

For a true leader to influence the lifestyle of his followers while driving the vision of any organization or nation, certain values and characteristics must be possessed and exhibited. These qualities enable a leader to be committed and dedicated to improving and transforming the lives of people. These qualities include diligence, integrity, discipline, accountability, consistency, commitment, creativity, conviction, dedication, determination, competence and confidence. These are also referred to as the core values of true leadership and everyone who desires to lead must be willing to embrace these core values for effective and impactful leadership.

The quest for true leadership has been a subject of discourse in recent times. This is evident in the global clamours for progress and development in every aspect of human endeavor. The desire for higher standards of living, the pursuit of better social and economic policies and the search for effective measures for tackling crime and corruption has necessitated the need for leaders who genuinely seek the interest of the people.

The effect of true leadership cuts across every facet of the society because when leaders truly seek to transform the lives of people, it paves way for peace, progress and prosperity in the society. Whenever the subject of leadership is mentioned, the general perception is that it pertains to government officials or those holding political power, but the truth is this: everyone is born to lead in a particular area of human endeavor and with a capacity to contribute to the development of their communities and nations. The adoption of this mindset is what helps to simplify the process of orientating people on the importance of being true leaders in every aspect of life.

True leadership is a responsibility that should be shared by all. Although some people such as presidents, governors, ministers,  federal lawmakers, judges etc. have been vested with a greater responsibility of providing vision and direction on a larger platform, the fact still persists that the task of building a vibrant nation is a collective responsibility that must be shared by all and until all hands remain on deck, the vision of building a great community or an organized nation will forever remain a mirage.

To enable us achieve the goal of raising true leaders, it is essential that we highlight on the different dimensions of true leadership with the hope that it will create a platform for the emergence of true leaders in every facet of our nation.  In this book, we shall be exploring the 10 dimensions of true leadership and the respective roles they play to ensure the stability and success of any nation. It is my believe that as you embark on this intellectual journey, the desire to be a true leader will arise within you.

    Chapter 1

    Visionary Leadership

Good leaders have vision and inspire others to help them turn vision into reality. Great leaders have vision, share vision, and inspire others to create their own."

    ― Roy Bennett

Whenever the word vision is mentioned what resonates in my mind is the eyes and its ability to see things that are near and far. Truly, the eyes are like light to the body because without the eyes you cannot see and if you cannot see it means you are in darkness. This explains why lack of vision is synonymous to dwelling in darkness. Living without vision is like journeying through life in darkness. Coming to terms with this
