Words of Hope - Mona Pelletier

    Pray

    Introduction

The book you hold in your hands is written for those who are facing lost hope and long for daily comfort through an encouraging word. This devotional is also for those who have found their hope in God, but desire to know more about Him, receiving a daily infusion of strength and power. It is also for those who hunger for the truth found in His word through which hope is revived and salvation discovered.

My desire is for the reader to grow in relationship with God, bringing to light the knowledge of His character through God the Father, His Son, and Holy Spirit. All three parts of the Trinity reveal the Lord God to us in glory, splendor, awe, and holiness. In Him we find redemption from our past, peace for today and hope for tomorrow.

As I wrote Words of Hope I was in need of the comfort and strength found in the Word of God. I needed a firm, strong, and steady anchor to hold me securely when life seemed like a whirlwind of disappointment and loss. I felt tossed by the storms of life and longed for a place of stillness and rest. Through believing in Jesus my Savior and Friend, I discovered hope in Him to be the anchor for my soul.

My soul (my mind, will, and emotions) that had been bombarded with disappointment and sorrow became fixed on the One who holds me in His love.

I have suffered loss in my life, as many have. My father-in-law, whom I loved dearly, passed away a few years ago, leaving behind my mother-in-love, Judy who has been an inspiration to me through her trust in the Lord. I also greatly miss Andrew, our son-in-law, who died from cancer in March 2017 and has left a void in our family especially for my daughter, his wife. My family and I had many questions about why these tragedies happened to us, even though we prayed for healing and safety. Life is full of change and some of it is welcomed as good and others are not. I recall the day I left the hospital room of my son-in-law who had been given a week to live, and I drove straight to another hospital to hold my new grandson born to my other daughter and her husband. Life can take us off guard and mix a celebration of life with the reality of death. The emotions that accompany such events can be extremely overwhelming and often confusing.

There have been other changes in the last few years as well: our three children grew up and left home, we have downsized our home, we have had business and job changes, ministry changes, some friends have moved away, and there have been other small but significant changes. No matter the size or the severity of the changes we go through, each one has significance, and the comfort of God is available for us in each and every situation.

I have found peace and contentment while spending time in the secret place of the all-sufficient God. It is not necessarily a physical place, but rather a place of the heart where we sense His presence as we open ourselves to Him in prayer and worship. I also find hope in finding His perspective through reading and studying foundational truths of the Bible.

Through time with Him, He has changed my perspective, consoled my grief, revived my hope, and renewed my faith. We will grow through the challenges of life when we trust the Lord and do not give up our faith. All things serve a purpose in developing our character, causing us to become more like Jesus.

My prayer for you, dear reader, is that you will find hope in God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit as you look to Him and allow Him to be the Anchor that holds you securely through the changing waters of life. May God bless you, keep you, be gracious to you, cause His Face to shine upon you with His favour, and give you peace. (cf Numbers 6:24-26)

    Day 1

    Hope Is

This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil.

    —Hebrews 6:19

My favourite place to be in God’s creation is standing on the seashore, looking toward the ocean. I feel small there in my awareness that God is big and powerful, yet personal and near. The ocean waves intrigue me, as they faithfully come in and go back out, reminding me of God’s faithfulness. I talk with God there, and I listen to Him too, as He whispers to my heart, giving me guidance and revealing His love. Like the ocean, life is always moving and changing. I can imagine a boat being tossed recklessly at sea without an anchor to hold it in place. As the waves intensify, it can be moved entirely off its original course. An anchor will hold the boat securely in place.

What can hold us secure in our knowledge of God and in His purpose for our lives so that we are not tossed and moved about with every wind of circumstance? It is this hope that is revealed to us in Jesus, the anchor of our soul. Our hope is hidden beneath the surface of our deepest disappointments and pain.

Are you in a place of hopelessness where all seems lost? Has your heart become discouraged from disappointment? Hope can be found again. When hope is renewed, peace may be revived, and joy can be restored. In the midst of my own experiences of loss and disappointments, I do not see what is going on beneath the surface of what I am going through. I do not see the end from the beginning and I do not see the working of character development that God is constructing in me. He is working under the surface to stabilize my faith just as the anchor is working below the surface of the water to hold the boat securely in place. The stability of the boat is evidence of the anchor. Hope may not be seen with the natural eye, but the evidence of its existence is the ability to move forward with the expectation of good. Hope returns when our eyes look to Him and our hearts trust in His sustaining arms. Hope in Jesus is the anchor that is strong enough to hold us through the raging waves of the storm surrounding us. Return to the stronghold, you prisoners of hope. Even today I declare that I will restore double to you. (Zechariah 9:12) God promises to restore double back to us as we become captive to hope. In returning to the One that is stronger than us, we cannot escape the hope that prevails and the promise of the blessing that is yet to come. We hope for a better day because Jesus came to bring restoration and healing. A perfect picture of hope is painted by the words Jesus spoke and fulfilled from Isaiah 61:1-3: The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn, to console those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.

    Day 2

    Secure

And you will feel secure, because there is hope; you will look around and take your rest in security.

    —Job 11:18 ESV

Are you in the middle of a storm of life right now? Or are the waters still and calm at the moment? Whether the storm is screaming hopelessness! or the calm waters are bidding you to drift off in apathy towards God, there is an anchor of hope that will keep us steadfast in Him.

Hope in Scripture means a strong and confident expectation. Hope that comes from God is not just wishful thinking. It is firm and sure, keeping us sheltered by the presence of God.

Hope is a constant expectation of good, expectation of the thing believed for and expectation of a promise to be fulfilled. Biblical hope is an indication of certainty in His promises.

The Greek word for hope is Elpis. I find it interesting that it is pronounced EL Peace. El means God. Therefore, to have hope is to have God’s peace. When we find hope, we will also find peace. God’s peace is the rest and assurance that comes from trusting in Him.

God is the author of hope and the foundation on whom all our hope is built. The only way we can have certainty in hope is by knowing the Author of hope, Jesus Christ.

Even in hopelessness, hope can return to us…not a wishing hope, but a secure hope in the Lord whose concern is for us. His care upholds us. And now, Oh Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in you. (Psalm 39:7) What are we waiting for? Let us turn to God now and place our hope in Him, who is the anchor of our soul. This hope will keep us sure and steadfast in our faith through all circumstances. To remain steadfast is to remain fixed and sure with an unwavering trust in God. When life looks uncertain, we can have confidence that Jesus is, and always will be, our security.

Jesus is present in the Word of God, so hold fast to what He has promised. God’s Word is the final authority in every situation. It is a strong tower of safety for us. The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe. (Proverbs 29:25) We fear man when we are more concerned about what others think than what God’s Word says. Often we go to others for their opinion before we turn to God. When we give Him every concern, the weight is lifted from our shoulders as He removes the burdens. The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and I am helped. (Psalm 28:7) He is our Rock. He is solid and stable to protect us and guard us as we cling to Him. The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my Saviour; my God is my rock in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. (Psalms 18:2 NLT) We are safe in His care and covered by His love. He walks with us and carries us when our legs are tired from the journey. Let us cling to the Rock and take refuge in His unrelenting power and grace. He will never leave us alone.

    Day 3

    Believing

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

    —Romans 15:13

On New Year’s Day I asked Holy Spirit to show me a verse that would be my verse for the New Year that was starting. I opened my Bible to my most loved book; the book of Romans. I began reading from Romans chapter 8, and was reminded of His life that abides in me through His
