    Chapter One

    Honey, I’m home! Oh, I forgot, I’m a spinster. My voice cracks at the irony and I find myself in floods of tears. Soon, I am curled up on the sofa like a cat.

    Even though Dave has never been at home when I finish work, knowing that he won’t be coming through the door in the morning hurts. I face a long, lonely night on my own. The magnitude of what I have done is coming into focus. I am a gambler, a dirty, rotten gambler.

    I am not ‘Ju’ anymore. Not to Dave. I am someone else. A stranger.

    Whatever he previously thought of me dissipated in the length of a ’phone call with our bank manager.

    I find myself clinging to a cushion as if my life depends on it.

    It has been a difficult day at work. On the brink of tears from the moment I clocked on to the second I clocked off, I had to somehow survive the shift without telling a soul that Dave has left me – and why. I want to keep my private life private. That is as much for Dave’s sake as my own. I don’t want people dissecting my broken marriage, poring over who is to blame.

    I am the guilty party. That is all there is to it.

    You all right, Julie? Darren had asked, sensing there was something wrong the moment he clapped eyes on me.
