Glory, Grace and Gratitude - Jessica O'Connell
AN UNDERSTANDING
I watched in agony as this man before me
began to fall apart at the seams
as the hot, salty tears streamed down
his beet red cheeks, licking his lips
and burying his face in his hands.
––––––––
And I wondered what great catastrophe
could fall from the heavens
and bring such a man to his knees,
crying rivers of grief.
––––––––
And I cringed in misery and heartache
as I listened to each teardrop trickle
and sniffle try to be held back
and the moans of his sorrow
in his weeping heart.
––––––––
And I wondered what great catastrophe
could fall from the heavens
and bring a man to his knees,
crying rivers of grief.
––––––––
And then he looked up at me
with his deep, sorrowful glistening eyes
and knew I understood the pain,
but he could not comprehend it
and bowed his head once again, and cried.
––––––––
And I wondered what great catastrophe
could fall from the heavens
and bring a man to his knees,
crying rivers of grief.
––––––––
And I silently wept for his aching heart
as I inched my way over and knelt by his side,
wrapping one arm around his shoulder
and with the other, gently caressing his cheek,
wiping his hot salty tears away.
––––––––
And I wondered what great catastrophe
could fall from the heavens
and bring a man to his knees,
crying rivers of grief.
––––––––
And his eyes met mine
with the look of desperation to know
and I just held him in my arms,
rocking him back and forth
and we understood each other.
––––––––
And I finally knew what great catastrophe
could fall from the heavens to bring him to his knees
crying rivers of grief, and with a distant look I said, It’s okay.
TORN
Untamed tears trickled
to her tattered tortured soul.
Torrential thoughts of trepidation
trampled her life whole.
––––––––
Taking time to contemplate
relentless turpitude
so tightly twisted innocence
from her it did elude.
––––––––
Tempted to turn to truth,
she attempts to testify.
Tomorrow she tells the tale
of torture, tears and lies.
FIRE AND ICE
Ice burning my bones,
fire freezing my nerves,
this rage consumes me.
––––––––
Too terrified to let it show,
buried deep and locked up
shall it remain.
––––––––
Too weak to be strong,
too strong to be weak,
I feel so torn and confused.
––––––––
I don’t know where to start.
I’m naked and all alone now.
How can I be released?
––––––––
Won’t
