    As near as Maggie could tell in the moonlit winter night, the creature didn’t have ears. Or eyes. It barely had a head.

    It had teeth, though. Lots and lots of teeth.

    Her breath fogged out in front of her, capturing the glow of the moon before dissipating. She pressed her bony cheek against the rough bark of the lodgepole pine, breathing in its astringent cat-pee smell and hugging the tree as if to keep it from escaping. She held the rifle loosely in her free hand, ready.

    She had yet to get more than a glimpse of the creature, in spite of having trailed it through the snowy woods for the last twenty minutes. She’d left her damned bifocals on the kitchen table of the cabin, but she’d seen the thing silhouetted a couple of times against the starry sky as it sailed from tree to tree.

    In full sail, it looked like a square of black tinfoil, six feet by six, with pinpricks of starlight shining through what seemed to be thin, squared-off, membrane-like wings on either side of a thicker, cigar-shaped body. It had appendages at each corner and a tiny knob in between the two upper appendages. That was probably its head. If it had ears, they weren’t visible.
