About this ebook
Fear affects us all in some way; no one is completely immune from its icy clutches. It comes in all shapes and sizes, from a fear of tiny insects up to the fear of Death. Like all human traits, it evolved for a useful purpose, namely, to keep us safe from harm. Curiosity might tempt us to take all types of risks; fear holds us back.
Of all our emotions, it is possibly the most basic and motivating. In some cases the motivation is to face it down and come out feeling stronger. This must be the case for those who work in dangerous jobs such as firefighting and deep-sea diving. Others take up extreme sports for perhaps the same reason.
As a subject in its own right, fear fascinates us. In this book many people, past and present, reflect on various aspects of fear. It gives us much to think about...

Snippets of Fear - Dave Farnham
Introduction
Fear!
Even the word itself is unsettling.
Like all emotions, fear plays a major part in our lives, having been an important factor in the evolution and continuance of life on earth. It is meant to warn us to protect ourselves against life-threatening dangers and prevents us from taking unnecessary risks. Standing near the edge of a cliff on a windy day, for instance, can prompt you to move well back for obvious reasons.
Without the trigger that motivated our ancestors to choose between fight and flight, the human race would probably have disappeared from the face of the planet long ago (one wonders whether the dinosaurs that once roamed the earth died out because they
lacked a capacity to fear?).
Fear is generally regarded as a negative emotion, despite its necessary role in keeping us alive. Nevertheless, an enormous industry has grown up around it –rollercoasters, bungee jumping, horror films... Many people relish the thrill they experience when placing themselves in apparent danger, knowing that at the end of it they will probably remain unharmed. Others seek extreme activities that take them close to the brink, perhaps in their attempt to break through the fear barrier - mountaineers, astronauts, lion tamers... Some lose their lives in the process.
And then there are those whose daily lives are spent in jobs that require them to face situations that most of us would prefer to avoid, so fearfully dangerous do they seem: think of bomb disposal experts, firefighters or steeplejacks.
An extreme form of fear is one that has no rationality behind it and yet can be emotionally paralysing. This is called a phobia and is often harder to deal with than fear that is more rationally based. Seeing a large spider in the bath can send some people into a frozen sense of terror, unable to handle the situation.
Fear of a more subtle kind comes in a variety of guises and can hinder our progress through life: fear of failure or ridicule can prevent us from reaching our goals. A determined few have learnt to
