Among Ruins - Robert Gibb
Pittsburgh Memories (1984)
Romare Bearden, 1911–1988
A world on which the curtain’s gone up:
Silhouette faces,
Cut-and-paste,
The collage’s quilt of colors—
Or cutaway house,
as the catalogue calls it,
Inside and out on view,
One window see-through
In the back, one up front blacked out.
The colors in the parlor are almost tropical
Where three people sit
As if for a group portrait,
One of the faces pure African mask,
Though actually this is Pittsburgh,
His grandmother’s
Boardinghouse, steelworkers
To the rafters. Look around that room,
The catalogue suggests. What do you see?
(The dust broom on the floor,
The funnel horn
And turntable of an old Victrola.)
"Which forms look soft and blurry?
Which fracture space
So that it jubilates
Like music from the Red Hot Peppers?"
Smoke above the mills and a chuffing train:
Outside it’s factory
