Chapter One - Naked on Holiday

The hotel was just on a rise and about one hundred yards from the beach. Most of the rooms faced the sea but the owners could not claim a five star status without direct access onto the beach.

Here at last, said Hector and he drove their vehicle into the entrance to the hotel. It was just getting dark in this seaside town.

Two bags only, said Horace to the hotel bagman. Another man came to park the vehicle for them.

The two girls at the reception desk had been expecting them and gave them two keys. We are sorry but one room is facing the gardens at the back, said the senior receptionist, but we’ll get you a sea facing room as soon as we can, and probably in the morning.

Toss you for it, challenged Hector, and spun a coin in the air. He caught it and held it to show Horace.

Sorry, said Horace and took the key for the sea facing room.

Hector smiled resignedly and then followed the bagman to his room.

It was not only facing the garden at the back, but instead of a normal divan bed it had two bunk beds, probably designed for children, and Hector was anything but a child at the age of sixty-nine.

He was too tired to argue, but tipped the bagman and started to take off his clothes. The bathroom was attached and everything did work. He stood under the shower and let the hot water rejuvenate him.

He went down to the bar about thirty minutes later to find his colleague Horace already there and nursing a large Irish whiskey.

Same for me, ordered Hector and poured a small amount of cold water into his glass.

    Cheers, said Horace.

Mud in your eye. Hector responded smiling.

They agreed their programme for the morrow, and Hector walked back to his room at the back of the hotel where he noticed a lady trying to open his door, but she had the wrong key.

He smiled at her, and told her from the key number that her room was on the floor below.

He opened his door and walked in but the lady stood just outside his room.

Could we swap rooms, please, she pleaded. I’m too tired to walk down even a flight of stairs.

Hector smiled again, and looked at the contents of his spongebag spread out in the bathroom. The lady had followed him in.

My name’s Helen, she said, smiling.

She must have been in her late fifties, but had a nice smile, and from her dress indicated that she was neither too fat nor too thin. She was about four inches shorter than Hector, but did not wear too much make up, just a pale lipstick and a little eye shadow. Hector noted that she did look more than a bit tired.

Let me go and get your bag from your room, Hector volunteered, and took her key from her hand. I’ll move my things later.

Helen looked at him a bit listlessly, but said nothing.

Striding downstairs, Hector was only too willing to help a damsel in distress, even though, he smiled to himself, it had probably been a long time since she had been referred to as a damsel.

The key to her door did not work, and Hector looked for a telephone to call the Reception or Housekeeping, but there was nothing in sight, so he walked back up to his room, and opened the door.

Helen was lying on the lower bunk and was now sound asleep. She had not taken off any of her clothes; she had just fallen asleep lying on the covers.

Hector decided not to disturb her.

He went to the bathroom discarding his own clothes as he went and just leaving them on the floor, which he did normally. He put a towel around his waist and walked back to the bedroom. Helen was still asleep on the lower bunk so he climbed up to the upper bunk, pulled off the light covers, and crawled under them.

Damn, he moaned to himself, forgot the lights. But he did not get up; he just left them on, and soon fell asleep.

It must have been in the early hours that he awoke. Helen had gotten up and had not noticed Hector on the upper bunk, so she took off her clothes, but then not seeing her bag handy got back into the lower bunk naked.

Hector tried to go back to sleep, but couldn’t because he had to go to the bathroom. He climbed down, forgetting that his towel was no longer around his waist.

Helen was awake as he reached the floor, but secure and under the covers. She recognized him and smiled ruefully.

Nobody said a word as Hector walked on tiptoe, butt naked, to the bathroom. There, he wrapped a towel around his
