Snippets of Joan Rivers - Dave Farnham
Joan Rivers was for a long time America’s, in fact the world’s, most controversial comedienne, often saying out loud what others would be wary of thinking. This outspokenness won her friends and enemies, admirers and detractors in equal measure; though even her detractors have to admit that her humour, whilst somewhat questionable, could also be devastatingly funny.
But as well as using others as the butt of her savage humour, she was able to turn it effectively against herself, disarming those who saw her as conceited and self-glorifying.
There were some who regarded her as shallow, with little of importance or interest to say; yet she was a woman with a degree in English Literature and Anthropology and with a complex background. Her parents were Jewish immigrants from Russia; her mother came from a wealthy background, her father was a doctor with a great sense of humour and much loved by his patients; though his obsessive devotion to his work kept him from his family for a lot of the time and Joan attributed her need for an adoring audience to the feeling that she did not get enough attention as a child.

On finding an agent, Tony Rivers, she was advised by him to change her surname: he didn’t think the name Molinsky would open any doors for her; so she promptly renamed herself with his surname.
Joan was married twice. Her first marriage lasted only six months, being annulled on the grounds that her husband had never told her prior to their marriage that he did not want children. Her second marriage lasted twenty-two years and ended tragically when her husband, suffering from depression, took an overdose of Valium. She had one
