Every year I travel to exotic destinations and explore countries I have not yet visited, and 2018 was no different. After spending the previous year traveling to destinations like Mount Everest in Nepal, Mozambique, Vietnam, South Africa and Zanzibar, I decided this year to focus my travel in Europe.
My first trip was to Serbia where I traveled its cool and rugged mountain range area. Towards the end of my trip there, I decided to look for a sunnier and warmer location to go to next. I asked myself what was important to me and I wrote down a few conditions I desired my next destination to include: exotic beaches, special diving sites, interesting attractions, unique culture, excellent food, and to top it off, I wanted to enjoy a vibrant nightlife.
During my time in Serbia, I realized that it was a very big country and I had to travel long hours in order to get from one place to another; therefore, for my next destination I decided to look for a smaller country where locations are closer to each other and easier to get to, so I was able to experience more in less time. A colorful ad on Facebook caught my attention: the annual MTV Festival in Malta was about to begin and that was exactly what I needed. I had just sold one of the houses I owned in the U.S. and made a nice profit. I felt proud of the work I had done and wanted to party.
In ancient times, it seemed very difficult to locate the island of Malta. In May 1565 the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Suleiman the Magnificent, sent a force of 40,000 Turkish troops to invade Malta, defeat and conquer the 700 Knights of Malta and a few thousand more fighters.
Against all odds, and mostly due to the inefficient functioning of the Turkish army leadership, its forces were defeated and the Turkish army, which suffered great loss, began to retreat to their ships and sail back to Constantinople. According to stories, the source of the familiar expression Malta Yok
was first written in a report submitted by the Turkish commander of the ground forces, Mustafa Pasha, to the Sultan. Concerned for his fate, he reported that his forces simply did not locate the island of Malta, and wrote Malta Yok,
meaning Malta does not exist. The glaring problem with this kind of untruth was hiding the deaths of 8,000 soldiers who never made it back home to Turkey. The Ottoman commander was inevitably exposed upon the return of the Turkish forces and was immediately dismissed.
Today it is a bit easier to locate Malta!
Despite its miniscule size, it has drawn attention from all over the world, and has indeed much to be proud of.
The Republic of Malta is a small island country made up of several islands (only three of them are inhabited) and located in the center of the Mediterranean Sea, south of Italy. I
