It was five-minutes past four, but outside it was already dark. It wasn’t raining yet, but heavy blue storm clouds hung low in the sky, threatening to open at any moment and soak the world. Christian stood at the bedroom window. The buildings in the distance had disappeared from view and he could no longer see the hill at the top of King Road. The road was practically deserted, and the surface had taken on a shiny black appearance.

Nothing, he replied. He’d been standing at the window thinking, but he couldn’t tell her that. She never seemed to think. So it didn’t seem likely that she would understand his need to.

She glared at him. A look that seemed to say that she knew full well what he’d been up to and that she didn’t approve of it.

Are you alright? he asked, ignoring her obvious provocation.
