Differences Between A Man And A Woman
What is a modern man?
A man is a person of the male sex. The word man
is usually used when referring to an adult. A child and a teenage boy are commonly referred to as a boy
, lad
, or guy
.
In different countries people address a man in different ways:
- In English-speaking countries, usually as Mister
(or Mr.
in writing);
- In Germany, as Herr
;
- In Spain, as Señor
;
- In Western Slavic countries, as pan
;
- In Russia, it is often used a mere name or name with a patronymic, while in other cases they use specific words for citizen
, man
, father
, grandfather
, comrade
, commander
, and so on. Sometimes words like grandfather
are used figuratively, without an actual family relationship, A child might use words like Dad
or Pop
.
In many languages, including English, the same word (a man
) designates a male human and a human being as such. This phenomenon is called androcentrism; men and a male are viewed as a norm against which the woman and the female are seen as a deviation.
The male body includes two different sex chromosomes, marked as X and Y. There are two X chromosomes in a female body. Active X chromosomes are a set that includes both maternal and paternal cells; therefore, women are more complicated genetically. The stronger sex gets the X chromosome from their mothers only. The Y chromosome contains less than 100 genes, while the X chromosome carries approximately 1500 genes. It is genetic predisposition that predetermines one’s sex.
Primary and secondary sex characteristics make men different from women anatomically and physiologically.
Primary sexual characteristics, formed during fetal development, become functionally active later as a result of puberty. Male genital organs are a part of the reproductive system. These include the penis, testicles, seminal duct and prostate. The task of the male reproductive system is the production of semen (seminal fluid containing spermatozoa), which, when delivered inside the female body, fertilizes an egg. Thus, the male reproductive system is involved in conception, but is not directly involved in the process of pregnancy.
Secondary sexual characteristics of the male organism develop during puberty. This process occurs under the influence of androgens, male sex hormones that are produced in the testes. Puberty in males usually begins at age 14, later than puberty in females.
Male secondary sex characteristics include a muscular system more developed than that of women, large hands and feet, narrow hips, broad shoulders, profuse hair growth on the face, groin, abdomen, chest and other parts of the body, a lower voice, and a protruding Adam's apple.
The biblical expression Adam's rib
, the body part from which God has created woman, could, according to some scholars, originally have meant penis
or more precisely the penile bone (baculum). All primates have this bone, except for humans and spider monkeys.
When God removed the rib
from Adam, a scar
was left on the underside of the external male genitals; it is still visible today on all members of the stronger sex.
Certain areas of the frontal lobe and prefrontal cortex, controlling the ability to make decisions, are thicker in women than in men.
In the male body serotonin, which regulates emotions and mood, is synthesized at a rate 52% faster than in the female body.
Physical and behavioral differences between men and women:
- a woman is more involved in verbal interaction (more talkative);
- a man is more prepared for action and competition;
- it is easier for a woman to deal with time and for a man to deal with space;
- men’s vision is more developed;
- a woman is more sensitive, her sense of hearing is more developed, her sense of smell is more delicate, and she has ten times more tactile receptors of the skin (she needs touch).
All of these differences are determined by evolution:
- man has always been more suited to hunting, fighting, rivalry and long-distance chase;
- woman was engaged in rearing children and their education, remained in the enclosed space of the cave and therefore had to resort to talk and cooperation.
A woman can lovingly detail the flow of family life literally restlessly. But a man measures his biography in major events, abrupt changes, great achievements.
For men, unlike women, there is a taboo (unconscious ban) against being weak or requesting support.
It is important for a man that his position be adopted by his opponent. For a woman, her viewpoint is understood by the person she wants to influence. Accordingly, the fairer sex shows greater inclination towards dialogue.
It is easier for woman to submit to a man who is in a higher position in the workplace, while, on the contrary, it is hard for a man to submit to a woman. The stronger sex considers itself a leader both at work and at home.
Women commit crimes much less frequently than men. The majority of those of fairer sex who have committed violent acts did so out of desperation (for examples, wives kill husbands who have severely maltreated them for years).
According to gender stereotypes, men have a larger body mass and muscle strength compared to women but are less resilient. The stronger sex is considered more aggressive, dominating, self-confident, independent, courageous, tough, active, logical. In women, dependence, meekness, timidity, dreaminess, superstition, anxiety, sentimentality, propensity for empathy are seen as immanent.
In general, a greater number of positive traits is attributed to the stronger sex as opposed to the fairer sex. And yet often the typical features of both sexes acquire a negative connotation. So men are blamed for sharpness, authoritarianism, excessive rationalism, while women are accused of formalism, passivity, excessive emotional sensitivity...
Curiously, in one research project, when composing a verbal self-portrait, 25% of women used words more characteristic of descriptions of typical men, and the same number of men described themselves as typical women. But when describing a best friend, both men and women wanted to see a male friend matching the description of a typical man and a female friend matching the description or a typical woman.
In the mass view, a woman is perceived as a carrier of the aesthetic function: she is beautiful, charming, feminine. And a man must be strong, reliable, courageous.
According to scientists, the concept of male
and female
qualities often leads people astray, as oftentimes qualities society ascribes to men are found in a greater degree in women and vice versa. There is always something feminine in every man, and every woman has something masculine.
In terms of attractiveness, women are leaders in the public view. The man looks like a monster, despite his certain merits: he is cruel, brash, arrogant, unpolished, absurd, self-centered, lazy, boastful, thick-headed, overconfident, unkind. Compared to the man, the woman is simply an angel: she is tender-hearted, calm, attractive, submissive, kind, humane, democratic, she abhors violence, feels injustice acutely, she is more responsive to others' feelings, she is easier to educate. Though she also has such small feminine weakness
as forgetfulness, hyperbole, hysteria, propensity towards depression, short temper, envy, and a loose tongue.
Scientists have noticed that among middle-aged men memory is much worse than that of their female peers. The trend towards deterioration of memory does occur in women over time, but in the post-menopause phase this process ceases and memory function is stabilized. Women begin to overtake men on memory level tests again.
According to modern gender stereotypes, men have qualities such as striving for leadership and risk, energy, initiative, belligerence and rationality. Society generally condemns the manifestation of weakness and emotionality by men. However, men, like women, often exhibit anger, sadness, and fear. And men are more likely to express anger and suppress other negative emotions, whereas women, on the contrary, suppress anger and express sadness and fear.
With gender inequality in a society, qualities stereotypically ascribed to men are traditionally valued higher than qualities ascribed to women. Gender stereotypes often harm men. In particular, they contribute to risky behavior and even to committing crimes; these stereotypes also prevent men from seeking help when they become victims of violent acts.
According to ancient social attitudes, a man is viewed as the provider and the wife as the homemaker. The woman, while sheltered, could regularly provide easily digestible food for a man. She hoped nevertheless for his patronage against encroachment on the
