About this ebook

WARNING: Contains high impact horror and mature themes. Discretion is advised.

The only thing worse than being neuroatypical is to look it. Such is the slow, plodding life of Fermio.

Until, one day, against his better judgement, he breaks his rigid routine and, embracing the uncertainty of the world outside of his control, he finds someone who doesn't pre-judge him.

But the things that follow him, that force him into routine, don't appreciate this change of attention and will do what is necessary to return him to his regulated life.

    1: An Apartment

With a cane in one shaky hand and her other gripping the railing, the old woman took unsteady steps up the stairs. Other tenants of the apartment complex overtook her. She looked up with pursed lips.

One day they'd understand the frailty and weakness of the human body too.

She heard someone speak from behind her, a man with an unmistakable voice that could only be described with the unfortunate term 'retarded' - or 'developmentally challenged' or whatever term was used these days. The old lady glanced back. It wasn't just his voice, the poor man looked a little dumpy too, with a wide-set look about him. Like her, his weaknesses were broadcast by his entire body. He asked, Would you like some help?

She responded, with a voice shaped by the ravages of time, Yes, thank you.

With his thick arms and stumpy fingers he gently took her arm and stepped with her up the stairs.

As they walked, she asked, And how are you?

    The man nodded. Good.

That's good. Do you do much when you're not at work?

    He stared at her. No.

OK. Do you enjoy your work?

The man frowned. ... I do the work.

That's good to know, she replied, trying to genuinely interested in his non-answer.

They reached the top of the stairs. The old woman smiled at him. Thank you very much.

The man smiled back and said, It's OK. Bye-bye.

The old woman looked around her apartment, at the gaggle of other old women. That Fermio was a right gentleman. Not many of those around these days.

Another, Diann, gave a grunt of approval. Or women, Ida. Always complaining about jobs and education - and then complaining that there aren't any good men! Who do they think would've had those jobs instead?

Ida nodded. Indeed. Or thinking they can have it all. Or lying about having it all. I swear, those single mothers on TV wouldn't be so proud of that if they actually understood that a child needs more than a nanny and the occasional dinner with their parent.

Yeah. Sometimes they need a smack on the backside, or a warm hug. How do these people expect to learn that? asked Pema.

They don't, Gaiane said, shaking her head. "Not until they find out that their
