Chapter One
Chloe Palmer followed the man she met at Lafitte's Bar through the streets of New Orleans. They dodged through the tourists as they made it to the quieter streets of the Quarter. With a turn down Dauphine, she took the lead and headed for the only home that she's known in New Orleans. After two blocks, she stopped in front of the gates to the voodoo shop. The door opened as she took the steps to the porch and the door was filled with the essence that was Odessa.
Terrence had heard about the old voodoo priestess that lived in the Quarter. He respected her; almost feared her and started slowly through the gate and up the porch. The eyes of the priestess watched him as he made it up to the porch and right to the threshold. He could feel the barrier that kept him from entering the house. Odessa looked him up and down as if to analyze his worth in her home.
Why should I let you enter?
She asked with one hand on her hip and the other on the door jamb.
He paused., unsure of how he should answer.
I followed her,
he pointed to Chloe.
The moon follows the sun,
Odessa said with sass.
Odessa,
Chloe stopped her. It's fine. He might have some information.
You can come in,
she stepped aside and assessed him again as he walked past.
Why you bringin' someone him here this late at night?
Odessa said as she took her place beside the dimming fireplace.
Some shit happened at the cemetery,
Chloe started as she sunk into a chair and rubbed her face.
What did you get into now, gal?
I think I got the man who turned me.
But?
But he works with me,
Terrance said as he further into the sitting room.
And what exactly do you do?
Chloe questioned.
I…I don't know. I watch the Quarter. For vampires.
But how do you know that guy?
He just showed up at my door. I don't know his name, where he comes from. Nothin'. He just comes to my place on Fridays and gives me an envelope of money. Then he leaves.
Why you?
Odessa pulled out her bowl without looking at him.
I don't know. I came here a couple of years ago. Same as you,
he pointed to Chloe. "I'm partying on Bourbon and the next thing I know, I wake up on a slab. The door opens and I'm pulled out.
