Let Me Follow - Palmer Campbell

    One

Dina folded the damp dishcloth and started to wipe down the sticky wooden bar top. It was close to three in the morning and Nick, the bar’s do everything man, was done with his kitchen clean up and was flipping the chairs onto the empty tables to start mopping the floors. Not that mopping would do much. Judging by the smell, the place needed to be hosed down, but cleaning wasn’t Dina’s job and if the patrons didn’t complain, neither would she.

Her long brown hair was tossed up into a messy bun, and her brown eyes were glossed over in desperate need of sleep. Working nights at the bar, while pursuing a Criminal Justice degree was exhausting, but she had no other choice. A yawn escaped her lips as her eyes surveyed the floor.

She sighed at the sight of him.

As he’d done for the past week, Jameson Watts sat alone in a booth at the corner. His short black hair flopped down into his severe blue eyes as he stared at nowhere in particular. Thick stubble wrapped around his face like a prickly ski mask and the scars on his hands showed he’d lived a hard life.

For some reason, Dina liked to picture him as a sexy cowboy. However, at this particular moment, she saw him as nothing more than the nuisance keeping her from sleep.

Her nostrils flared as she saw that instead of finishing his drink and walking out, the man took a slow, deliberate sip. He looked over his shoulder but didn’t move.

Decided to take matters into her own hands, Dina pulled her shirt down causing her 42DDD breasts to nearly spill from the flimsy top like pale peaks of peachy flesh. The move was a win-win situation between her and the men who frequented the bar—they were happy with some titty action, and she got whatever the hell she wanted.

How are you doing tonight? she asked, propping her hands atop of the man’s table and cocking her hips. I don’t mean to be a drab, but we’re closing. So, you need to finish that bad boy and settle your tab, okay?

Jameson looked up at the beautiful girl and did something most men wouldn’t at the sight of her cleavage. He frowned.

He barked. Just gimme a sec. I’m looking for somebody.

The raspiness Dina heard in his voice and made her heart skip a beat. She’d always had a thing for older men, and this guy was all of that and more. Images of his scruff nuzzling the insides of her thigh made their way to her mind and warmed her all over.

A smile curled up in her plump lips. Who are you looking for?

A girl named Annabelle, he told her in a dry tone as he pushed a girl’s picture toward the bartender.

Dina looked down at the photograph and shrugged her shoulders, I don’t think I’ve seen her, but it’s a college bar. There’re lots of girls who look like that. Sorry.

It’s fine. I’ll be outta here in a minute, he told her sharply. He stored the picture back into his jacket’s pocket and shifted his gaze from Dina and to the empty bar.

Okay, she said with a roll of eyes. I’ll give you five more minutes, but then Nick is coming over, and he’s not as nice as I am, okay?

The man looked at her once more and nodded. Pleased with herself, Dina winked at the man and waltzed back over to the bar, exchanging a glance with Nick on her way.

Although Nick’s primary occupation at the establishment was making quick dishes for anyone who dared order off the menu and cleaning, his massive size and girth made him an excellent bouncer. He was also a sort of security guard to Dina, keeping drunks and undesirable alike away from her.

For the next five minutes, Dina continued to watch the stranger who refused to leave as she finished her activities for the day. Once Nick was about done mopping the floors and closing the register was the only thing left on her to-do list, she approached the man’s table once more.

Alright, time’s up. Here’s your tab. She placed the piece of paper in front of him. When he didn’t move—again—Dina put her hands on her slim waist and raised a brow. Dude, I don’t think that girl is coming tonight—as we closed forty minutes ago. Want me to call you a cab or something?

I don’t need a cab, Jameson told her with a sigh. He stood, tossed a few bills on the table and made his way toward the front door. I can find my own way home.

She had seen many weirdos in her time as a bartender, but this guy . . . She didn’t know what to make of him. However, she was certain that would be coming back.

What’s that guy’s problem? Nick asked as he approached her with his massive arms folded across his chest.

Who knows. Dina shook her head and shrugged her shoulders as she collected the money and began to wipe down his table. He’s been coming in here every night for the last week. He just sits in this same booth, sips on the same drink and minds his own business, but he usually leaves before closing. She walked over to the bar and put the money in the register. Said something about a girl, but I don’t know who she is.

Dina’s words still hung in the air when a door at the back burst open. She and Nick both muttered curses under their breaths as three men stumbled out of the room, drunk and laughing. A foul smell called her towards the open door, and she saw red as she peeked inside and saw the mess they had made.

The table was littered with food crumbs and playing cards, and the floor was a mess of broken glass and pools of liquid—a mixture of spilled alcohol and urine, she guessed from the smell. She hated Thursday nights.

You ASSHOLES! Dina screamed at the men, who merely turned to look at her in bewilderment.

Aww sweet pea, don’t get your titties twisted! It’s just a little mess, one of them shouted back with a chuckle.

"A little mess? You pissed on the floor! Get the fuck out Larry
