The Butterfly Island is several stories joined together into a family saga. One story brings together Victorian England and colonial Ceylon. Another takes a German woman to Sri Lanka. There are stories of failing marriages, new love, and the consequences of inappropriate love. At the center of it all is a mystery, the family secret that waits undiscovered until the secret’s holder is dying. Bomann deftly flits from the family’s exotic colonial tea plantation to the their draughty 20th century manor house. From love’s innocence to its legacy.Well-written. An engaging read.
