Grown Folks Business - Tayah Nicole Parker
Part I:
1
I really hate coming to this part of town.
Disney Sparks rolled her eyes as she got off of Route 13, the city bus that stopped five blocks away from her family’s hotel. West Xavier had numerous of parts to it, just like neighboring Los Angeles. The fact that the Sparks Inn was located on the Southside irritated her. It wasn’t the location---it was the people.
What up, Dis?
One guy said as she passed by. Where you goin’?
She rolled her eyes in his direction as she kept on walking. She didn’t have time for whatever 5th grade pick-up line he was about to use. She was already late for work, as it is. Just as she walked past, the guy smacked her butt and grinned when she turned around.
Did you just put your damn hands on me?
Damn Dis, when are you going to let me hit that?
He asked as he licked his lips. You know you got it goin’ on.
Yeah, I know.
She said as she walked up to him. But the next time you touch my ass without my permission…
She kneed him in the midsection and added: …I’m going to be the one doing the hitting.
As she began to walk away, she heard him mutter ‘bitch’ in her direction.
Disney rolled her eyes as she continued walking. When she got to the entrance of the Sparks Inn, she found her mother sitting behind the desk with a frown on her face.
Hey Mom.
Disney said as she kissed her mother’s cheek. Where’s Alex?
Ella Sparks sighed as she began to close out the morning/afternoon sales. I fired him. Caught him and one of the housekeepers screwing around in one of the rooms.
That wasn’t a shock. Disney told her mother that her cousin Alex wouldn’t do right by the business. From coming in drunk to sexing the employees to stealing…Alex Overbrook had a laundry list of things against him. Disney sat her backpack down and looked toward the hallway.
Ella caught her staring at the furniture and said: We had a ruckus last night. Those damn teens broke up everything. I’m putting more into this hotel then it’s putting out. We didn’t have a good week, Disney. We’re barely over 30% full.
She sighed as she put the finance/accounting book away. You may have to find another job after while. I know how much that scholarship means to you and I want you to keep it.
Don’t worry, Mom. I’ll just see if I can apply for a student loan to hold me over.
Those things are expensive to pay back.
I got it under control.
Disney said as she kissed her mother’s cheek. Go home and get some rest. Oh, and you might want to call a cab. The Intrepid broke down in the driveway so I had to catch the bus here.
Ella nodded as she grabbed her coat and purse. She looked at her daughter and smiled. I’m proud of you, Dis. I really am. Make sure you lock up before eleven. I saw some thugs walking around, so keep a watchful eye.
Disney contemplated telling her mother that one of ‘those thugs’ had gripped her rear end not too long ago. She’s exhausted. It’s best to leave it alone. As Disney prepared to begin her shift, she took the liberty of taking a look at the current finance report. When she opened the book, she nearly fainted.
$2,137.42? That’s all we made last month? Disney sighed as she put the finance report up. Something would have to give. With more bills than money and a scholarship tuition that was taking a big bite out of their finances, Disney knew she would have to make some moves before they found themselves living out of the hotel…that is, if the bank didn’t foreclose on it before then.

Disney took a deep breath as she stared at the ten-digit phone number sitting before her. Her mind was telling her ‘no’, but the hurt look in her mother’s eyes was telling her to make the call. She took another deep breath before dialing the Minneapolis, Minnesota number.
Ring, ring, ring.
Hello?
A female voice answered on the other end.
This bitch. Tanya, can I speak with Jayson, please?
And who is this?
Disney wanted to cuss her sister-in-law out, but decided against it. Disney, his sister.
Tanya groaned as she looked toward her husband. Disney wants to speak to you.
Jayson sighed as he took the phone from his wife and said: What’s the problem now, Dis?
Jayson really irked her. Ever since he started his own law firm, he thought he was ballin’ out of control. He had obviously forgotten that not even four years ago he, too, was struggling to help make ends meet. When he married his wife, Tanya, all hell broke loose. The phone calls started slowing down until one day, they simply stopped.
I’m going to cut straight to the point. We didn’t make a lot of money last month and the bills are due. My scholarship tuition needs to be paid and the hotel is facing bankruptcy. We need help, Jay.
Silence.
Hello?
Look sis, I want to help, I really do---but I already promised Tanya a trip to the Bahamas. I’m totally spent.
That’s bullshit, Jayson, and you know it. You can’t even loan your own mother a couple of dollars to pay the bills? Would you rather see us on the streets while you live it up with that trick you call a wife?
Hold the hell up.
Jayson interjected. "First of all, Tanya is not a trick. That’s first. Second of all, I’m tired of bailing that hotel out. I’ve helped out four times and each time, it continues to fall in the hole. Now, if you want some money, I suggest you do one of two things---get rid of the hotel or find a job with your degree."
"Why? So your wife and her family can add it to their shrine? How could you, Jayson! Mama’s been nothing but nice to us and this is how you
