    Moving Small Groups into Mission

I had the appointed privilege of taking discovery journeys with two open-minded skeptics, one a staunch atheist, and the other a disbelieving theist. After meeting weekly for a nine-month stretch, both became Christians only two weeks apart. During that amazing odyssey, God revealed to me from their lives The Steps to Faith. This book is appropriately dedicated to my dear friends now in the Lord, David Guido and Anita Pearson.

    The Missional Engagement Series

Reflected in the hub design, The Missional Engagement Series is not one-dimensional or linear, but rather, a holistic layout. Two concepts are critical. First, mission is taught in every phase. Never considered optional or ancillary, being a disciple is about being on mission for Jesus. Second, the design develops disciples progressively in stages. By this, it recognizes how Christian maturation actually occurs, needing reinforcement and refinement over time.

Threaded themes drive the curriculum in a compelling way:

These materials create habits and experiences to shape Christ-likened character and skills. Each vehicle can work independently, yet they fit within a grand design for synergistic impact.

    Steps to Faith Interactive

Please know that there is total flexibility with using this material. If you are looking to facilitate smaller groups, I have placed interactive questions in the back portion. Another option is to have the members read sections beforehand and then meet to discuss. For classes, teachers will want to use questions interactively as they expound on the course content.

It is a dangerous business going out your door—you step on the road and if you don’t keep your feet there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.

    —Bilbo Baggins

There is an episode in the epic tale, The Lord of the Rings , when Frodo must leave his home to venture into a world he had never seen. Little did he know of what lie ahead. How could he have anticipated all that would be set in motion—by putting his hand to the knob—and taking that first footfall from his Shire door? Every great adventure begins with a first step. Without it, Frodo wouldn’t have had his quest. And we wouldn’t have gotten to enjoy an amazing story!

With no lesser scope of grandeur, the first step of one’s spiritual journey may be the biggest. Since the spiritual life is measured in the heart, the initial step must be the open-willingness to explore spiritual truth. Sadly, many people never take a serious look at what faith offers. They are like window shoppers who quickly glance but do not enter. Because of reluctance, they never truly open their hearts to what God has in store for them.

Perhaps, you are different! You are reading this book either by yourself, with a friend or in a class. Are you willing to take a good look at the incredible claims of the
