To My Favorite Daddy and Rosie
Thank you, Daddy, for being a living example of the Works of Mercy. Whether it be sheltering the homeless, giving food to the hungry, counseling the doubtful, or comforting the sorrowful, I know your heart is sincere and can feel your love radiate to all. I have enjoyed your role as BAMBI. You teach Rosie, my goddaughter and niece, as you taught me, with all the love in the world. Rosie has a heart of gold and an unbelievable imagination, always placing God first. In the span of my lifetime, you, Daddy, have taught me how to walk the walk and not just talk the talk. I love you. Forever.
To Skyler and Baby Emma
May you grow and learn to love the Lord following in the path of your oldest sister, Rosie. I love you so much.
Foreword
Mitch Finley
When Jesus admonished his disciples to love God with their whole heart, mind, etc., and their neighbor as themselves, that’s pretty much where the conversation ended. No one piped up with, Um, Lord Jesus? What exactly do you mean when you say we should love our neighbor?
In another context, however, Jesus told the story of the Good Samaritan, which nearly everyone knows about. The Samaritan—despised by the Jews of Jesus’ time—loves his neighbor by caring for his physical (corporal) needs. Sacred tradition takes its cue from this by giving us the traditional Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. Because we think of body and soul / corporal and spiritual as separate at our own peril, the Church offers us the works of mercy so that love of neighbor does not become a mere theory or hypothesis. Rather, to engage in the Corporal Works of Mercy is also to attend spiritual needs, as well. And to practice the Spiritual Works of Mercy is to meet others’ bodily needs, too.
The more we focus on the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy, the more our love for our neighbor becomes real and effective. This finely crafted study guide will give study groups, as well as individuals, what they need to better understand the Works of Mercy and put them into practice both at home and in the wider world. The more we do this, the more the world’s onlookers will repeat the words of those who observed the earliest Christians: See how they love one another.
