About this ebook

Jesus, the rabbi of Nazareth, was always on the move. Therefore, shadowing him, following in his footsteps, amounts to being engaged in a continual process of becoming, of reinventing oneself, of being born anew every day. This nomadic lifestyle, which fosters simplification and improvisation, is paradoxically also very enriching--to the point of transforming us into pilgrims on the way to the messianic age.

Being in Transit, Both in Body and in Spirit

    I am the way

The Gospel narratives are presented to us in a very supple style, an approach that is sometimes simple, often poetic, in some cases light, in others serious and where a space between words is often left for moments of wonder but, also, moments of questioning, of incomprehension, even of indignation.

As on a trip, where countryside and events hold surprises as well as provide obstacles, the Gospels and, more broadly speaking, all the biblical texts carry us along toward the unknown territory of journeys into and within ourselves.

In order to enter upon the path of understanding a text, it is good to receive what is difficult with the same openness one does with what seems obvious. That way, little by little, a kind of knowledge will emerge that originates not just in the head but in the heart to know who we really are—that is, our history, where we come from, our way of life, our ideas and prejudices, in short, all aspects of our identity, understood in its totality, at the moment we are reading the text.

Jesus was a traveling man. Over the course of his days and journeys, simply by moving about, he picked up an incomparable wisdom which must have strongly influenced his teaching. Because of a distance that seems to have both a geographical and an internal aspect, Torah revealed itself to him in a new light, with a real world meaning that shocked some of his fellow Jews who heard him. Along with his movements around the country came inner experiences. It is this twofold journey, both in space and inside himself, which fostered the richness, the originality, the
