    Chapter One

    The only sound Dakoda could hear was the steady inhale and exhale of her breathing into her oxygen mask. The cold of the metal mask was strapped to the bottom half of her face. It had been since she was old enough to step foot outside and she couldn’t imagine what it would be like to not have it on for the better part of a day.

    The wind was harsh today, the sand of the desert terrain stung as it hit her, whipping her brown hair around her face in an almost frenzy. The air was thick with heat, making her clothes cling to her skin with sweat.

    Planet Earth was all Dakoda had ever known. This desert-like state where almost no living thing could survive was all that was left and it was a wonder the human race had survived at all. She'd heard rumors, of course. Tall tales of what Earth had been like before the planet had been messed up beyond recognition. Those were just tales, of course, she didn't think she believed it.

    Dakoda tread through the sand, her feet sinking in every so often making the short trip to the training facility a dire one. She knew she was late and would most definitely get in trouble for it. With the scorching sun beating down on her, she couldn’t bring herself to care much at all.

    Before she could open the door to the facility, it sprung open, revealing a woman slightly shorter than her. The woman’s hair was cut so short that she was almost bald. She had tanned skin which was inevitable from the constant sun.

    Dakoda, she said in an authoritative tone that left no room for interjection. Her breathing mask made her voice sound recorded and mechanic
