Introduction
Six years ago, the administration in our city decided that there was going to be a complete ban on plastics, as far as shopping bags and food packaging, in local industries and enterprises were concerned. This decision was hailed in the press and approved by the public, but the business section seemed to be disturbed. How would they do without plastics? Especially for packing/storage, and other purposes?
That was six years ago and as it happens in a city where the enforcement is not done strictly, the saying no to plastics idea slowly and steadily went back into limbo, and back everybody went to plastic containers, plastic bags, plastic bottles, plastic jars, because after all it was a multibillion dollar industry, it had managed to permeate all over the world, and no silly small city administration was going to implement their own airy fairy arbitrary decisions when the big bucks were out in full force.
About 30 years ago, my mother started up a one lady campaign of saying no to plastic, because she had already seen these plastic bags choking up the rivers of her mountain state. And when she told people that they were not biodegradable and they would never decompose like natural products are going to do, she got looks of “lady, going senile, so humor her and listen to what she has to say, with a poker face.”
And that was the time when she decided that her house was going to be 0 garbage & 0 waste house, the concept of which had not been thought by anybody except the more knowledgeable of environmentalists, who the rest of society called totally weird and crazy.

And when she told people that they were not biodegradable and they would never decompose like natural products are going to do, she got looks of lady, going senile, so humor her and listen to what she has to say, with a poker face.
And that was the time when she decided that her house was going to be 0 garbage & 0 waste house, the concept of which had not been thought by anybody except the more knowledgeable of environmentalists, who the rest of society called totally weird and crazy.
This book is going to tell you all about how you are going to say no to plastics, your own way, because that is how you are going to make a difference. You may say, what can one person do? But for 30 years, mother who has been very careful about zero waste/ zero garbage has been providing the whole family and the garden with rich organic compost/natural fertilizer/earthworm beds, and that is why, thanks to her, many people who had forgotten about organic gardening/water conservation/and recycling materials so that they can be used again, are now thinking – perhaps ma’am is not totally weird and crazy, everybody out there is getting to know more about the harmful effects of these plastics on our planet.
I am also going to show you some easy DIY projects through which you can utilize easily available items, to make recycled biodegradable, useful items. You are also going to learn how to make natural material and fiber bags – especially for shopping – so that the next time you go for your groceries, you can proudly announce that you are a Zero Waste Zorro and you are going to be carrying all your groceries from now on in non-plastic bags.
Today 30 years later, all over the world, people have begun to wake up to environmental issues. They have finally understood that the chemical products which go into the making of bags, containers, boxes, storage bottles are all made up of a material, which is deadly toxic, nonbiodegradable, chemical based, and harmful for the environment as well as for the earth.
This hot plastic is going to react with the food and produce poisonous BPA. So even if the food is delicious, mouthwatering, and rich in butter and spices, the BPA is the toxic material, which is going to harm you, long-term. Not the food you ate, even though the doctors out there are telling you this, do not eat this, do not eat that, that is bad for your health, whenever you want to eat at any natural, healthy food.
Also, all these food items stored in your
