    Beth swept the wide-brimmed hat from her head to make it easier to wipe the back of her wrist across her sweaty forehead. She narrowed her eyes against the glare of the late afternoon sun as she stared in the direction of the approaching rider, but the person was still too far away for her to get a good look at them. Not knowing who it was troubled her and there was no suppressing the prickle of anxiety. She put the hat back on to give her eyes some shade, but made no attempt to carry on with what she’d been doing.

    A long day of backbreaking work made her muscles ache and she leaned on the hoe she held to give herself some support as she continued to watch. Living on her own made her vulnerable and she was always wary of strangers, but her growing nerves abated when the person got close enough for her to recognize his face. She walked across to the fence which bordered her small piece of land and leaned on it to wait for one of her fellow homesteaders to arrive.

    Afternoon Joe, she said amiably when he brought his horse to a stop. Something I can do for you?

    Nope, he replied as he dismounted. I’m just doing the rounds to pass on some news of interest.

    Good or bad? Beth responded.

    I’ll let you be the judge of that, he said.
