When Three Become One
Chapter 1
Rain slammed against the windows of the diner as Autumn leaned against the doorway. It was coming down hard, rain splattering across the sidewalk and flooding out into the drains lining the street. She released a long sigh that fogged the window in front of her. The evening had been long and her coworker had yet to make an appearance. They weren't particularly busy, but it was still a bother to be the only waitress on staff after 9:00 PM.
She glanced at her watch. It wasn't even half past yet and her stomach was already growling again. She pushed away from the doorway and checked on a customer, then walked to the kitchen in the back. As she leaned against the counter, she rummaged through her purse. She procured her phone and proceeded to pop a piece of gum in her mouth while scrolling through messages.
Nothing. Nobody had called or texted. She sighed as she tossed her phone back into her purse and then crossed her arms over her chest.
Long night, Autumn?
She looked up to see the cook standing with his apron halfway off, wiping his hands on a dirty dish towel.
Don't use that one, Mark.
In one swift motion, she yanked a clean towel from her apron and tossed it in his direction. He caught it easily.
And yes, it's been a long and boring night. I wish Sara would show up already,
she replied after a long sigh.
Looks like a monsoon out there, too.
She nodded in agreement. While reaching out to the coffee maker for a fresh cup, she heard the doorbell ding. Mark raised his eyebrows with curiosity while peeking out the cook's window.
Got a table. Double,
he informed her.
Thanks, Mark.
She spit out her gum and, with her practiced customer service grin, she walked out to greet the two women who had just walked in. They sat huddled in the corner table away from the other two customers while dabbing each other with napkins.
Good evening, ladies. Would you care for something more effective?
she asked while pulling another fresh towel from her apron.
Oh, you are such a doll!
cried the one with red hair.
She took it immediately from Autumn and began drying off, dabbing the woman across from her as soon as she was done. Autumn collected the newly dirtied dish rag and tucked it into her pocket. She offered a polite smile.
What would you like to drink?
she asked.
Two coffees, please,
replied the redhead.
Can you add whiskey to mine?
asked the other.
Autumn giggled and shook her head.
Oh, well. Maybe next time,
the woman said with a wink.
With a nod, Autumn retreated to the kitchen to grab two coffees. She carefully placed them on the table and waited patiently as the two women looked over their menus.
Would you like me to give you a minute?
Autumn offered.
Actually, no. We'll both have the burger special with a side of fries,
replied the redhead.
Can you put cheese on my fries?
inquired the other.
Absolutely,
Autumn replied with a nod.
The redhead looked up at Autumn and gave her a crooked smirk. It seemed rather odd for the moment as she started to back away, but remained with a curious expression. The redhead reached out and played with Autumn's hair.
You have such an exquisite face,
she complimented.
Oh, thank you,
Autumn giggled.
Her face flushed instantly as the redhead continued to look her over. The other woman joined in the admiration and reached out to dust something off Autumn's apron.
You know, you would look ravishing with some highlights. I think you'd make an amazing model,
the woman commented.
Autumn flushed further.
Well, I'm just a waitress,
Autumn shrugged. I'll go put your orders in.
The woman smiled playfully as Autumn retreated to the kitchen. She clutched her apron while looking down at her disheveled uniform. How could I possibly be model material? The thought provoked an irresistible urge to return with the same inquiry. Those women looked like top models themselves, wearing the most luxurious silky dresses with matching heels.
Autumn peeked around the corner to study them. They were whispering to each other, occasionally holding hands and tracing skin. Were they involved? It wasn't an issue to Autumn, and it wasn't her concern at any rate, but it intrigued her. Their matching heels looked like top-of-the-line runway stilettos, sparkling in the dull diner lighting. They looked far too perfect to occupy such a pallid place.
Did they order anything?
Mark implored.
"Yeah, double twos
