    A Perfect Day in Porto

    9.00am

    Breakfast

Kick off the day with coffee, eggs and croissants at the lovely Mercador Café in Rua das Flores. Stroll along this appealing street with its grand mansions and enticing shops.

    10.00am

    Top of the tower

Visit the nearby Clérigos Church and Tower (for more information, click here). Climb 225 steps up the tower for the best views of the city, then take a peek inside the beautiful Baroque church.

    11.00am

    A feast of azulejos

Drop down Rua dos Clérigos for the Praça da Liberdade, civic heart of the city. The broad Avenida dos Aliados stretches grandly up to the Town Hall. Beyond the Praça you’ll find São Bento railway station, its entrance hall bedecked with 20,000 azulejos (tiles) illustrating scenes of Portuguese history and traditions.

    12.00pm

    Sé to Ribeira

Walk down the main street for the Sé (Cathedral) and admire the sweeping city views from the esplanade. Take a brief look at the cathedral and cloisters before heading down the steps to the right of the Episcopal Palace. A stairway leads all the way to the Ribeira but if you run out of puff a free lift makes light work of the steepest section.

    1.30pm

    Quayside cafés

From the Ribeira waterfront take the Dom Luís I bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia. Choose from the river-view cafés or grab a gourmet snack from the new Mercado Beira Rio just back from the waterfront.

    2.30pm

    Port galore

Follow lunch with a tour and tasting in one or more of the many port wine cellars (for more information, click here).

    4.00pm

    Jardim do Morro

Take the cable car up to the Jardim do Morro (gardens) for fabulous views of the river, Dom Luís I bridge and Porto, and even better ones if you climb up to the belvedere of the Serra do Pilar Monastery.

    5.30pm

    Aperitivo time

Return to Porto and stroll along the scenic Ribeira quayside, and choose a pavement café for a porto tónico (white port and tonic on ice), looking across at the port lodges on the left bank.

    8.00pm

    Trusty tavern

Try local specialities at Adega de São Nicolau (for more information, click here), a cosy cellar restaurant back from the waterfront at the western end of Cais da Ribeira.

    10.00pm

    Hit the galerias

Party with the locals in the bar-packed streets in and around Rua da Galeria de Paris, then dance the night away at Café au Lait (No. 46) or Plano B (Rua Cândido dos Reis, 30).

    Introduction

For centuries Portugal’s second city has been synonymous with port, but thanks to its recent renaissance, Porto offers far more than the famous ruby tipple. Once an industrial, workmanlike city,
