About this ebook

This manual is intended to provide examples of problems, and their solutions, for the Nomenclature section of the Matter, Chemical Trends and Chemical Bonding strand of SCH3U (Grade 11 University Chemistry) in Ontario. It is not a replacement for a course textbook or notes, but provides an overview of theories and calculations and a set of practice problems to help you master the content.

General advice: When looking at the solution to a problem:
•Pay attention to the format of the solution. Often the same format will be used over and over again!
•Pay attention to the units. Sometimes if you are not sure how to solve the problem, the units will give you a hint.

Note: In all problems, the answer is calculated using extra digits, and then rounded according to significant digits. This is indicated with (SD) after the final answer.

Note 2: You will need a period table to do this work. If you do not have one, Google one! There are lots out there to find. To make sure you are using an appropriate period table for this level Chemistry, make sure it has at minimum the same information for the element hydrogen as in the image. You will also need a table of electronegativity values for the elements. Many periodic tables will also have this information on them.

Note 3: If your answers to a calculation are close to mine (2.46 instead of 2.45 for example), there are two possibilities.
1) If there are multiple calculations involved in getting an answer, I could be using a different number of decimal places in the intermediate steps. As a general rule, use lots of decimal places in intermediate steps. This is because the more rounding you do the more rounding error you have. However, different teachers have different expectations for this. Do what your teacher says!
2) You are doing significant digits incorrectly. This is a very common problem. Review your significant digits rules!

I hope you find this manual useful!
